The successful applicant will focus on investigating the infection mechanisms of the rice kernel smut pathogen and developing sustainable strategies to effectively manage this emerging rice disease. Utilizing spore traps and qPCR technique, the researcher will track the dynamics of kernel smut fungal spores throughout a cropping season. Furthermore, research will be extended to understanding propiconazole fungicide resistance within fungal populations and developing effective fungicide resistance management strategies. The researcher will also evaluate and identify genetic resistance materials that can be used for breeding new rice varieties with improved resistance. In addition, the researcher is expected to explore the potential utilization of beneficial microbiomes for management of kernel smut. The individual will also participate in other rice plant pathology research projects as needed. This is a one-year appointment funded by a USDA NIFA award, beginning in May 2024, and can be potentially extended for up to two additional years contingent upon individual performance and funding availability. Applicants must have a PhD in plant pathology or related discipline and a strong record of publishing in scientific journals. The position will be located at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at Beaumont, TX. Salary commensurate with qualifications. The incumbent will work under the supervision of Dr. Xin-Gen (Shane) Zhou, professor of plant pathology, located at Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at Beaumont, TX. Responsibilities: · Participate in the rice plant pathology research program. Travels to field study sites, including David R. Wintermann Rice Research Station, for maintaining trials and sample collection. · Design, establish, and implement laboratory, greenhouse, and field research. · Collect, analyze, and summarize research data and prepare progress and final reports. · Disseminate research results and findings through presentations at annual field days and scientific conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals. · Lab equipment operation, maintenance, and modification. · Procurement of chemicals, consumables for lab equipment and other supplies. · Train and supervise graduate and undergraduate students. · Assist in the preparation and development of research grants and contracts. · Perform other tasks as necessary under the direction of the principal investigator. Required Education and Experience: · Doctoral degree in Plant Pathology or a closely related field. Preferred Education and Experience: · Molecular plant pathology research experience. · Fungicide resistance detection and management · Field trial experience with field crops, particularly rice. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: · Ability to properly design research experiments based on statistics and proficiency in analyzing and interpreting data using statistical methods and software. · Ability to develop lab, greenhouse, and field protocols involved in the performance of fungicides, beneficial microorganisms, and host resistance. · Knowledge of molecular biology techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, primer design, and sequencing. · Strong background in plant pathology with experience in molecular identification of microbes and microbiome research. · Ability to publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals. · Skills to present project results at field days, extension meetings, and scientific conferences. · Effective verbal and written communication skills. · Must be self-motivated and able to work independently. · Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Preferred Certifications: · Valid driver's license and able to drive a work pickup.
