    The Seals and Bearings business of Morgan Advanced Materials makes high-performance self-lubricating bearing and seal components, predominantly used in pumps, industrial and domestic, or other sealing applications.

    We use advanced carbon/graphite, silicon carbide, alumina and zirconia materials to engineer lightweight, low-friction bearings and seals. These materials help solve the problems associated with the use of lubricants in extreme temperatures, corrosive or hygienic environments where access is restricted, and are engineered into products which provide customer-specific solutions.

    Responsibilities

    The Development Engineer performs material, process, and product research and development tasks independently, or collaboratively with Development Technicians, Development Engineers, Senior Development Engineers, and/or the Technology Manager.  The Development Engineer is capable of planning, designing, and safely executing individual tasks, experiments, and projects in accordance with an agreed schedule, with work outputs reviewed by the Technology engineering staff.

     

     Essential Functions:

  • Adhere to the Group Environmental, Health, and Safety guidelines. Conduct all work in a safe manner.  Select and use appropriate PPE as dictated by the task requirements.  Escalate safety concerns appropriately and follow through to ensure their resolution.
  • Apply creativity, logic, and experience to problem solving. Assume responsibility for successful completion of experiments and tasks supporting the Technology group and other Morgan functions. 
  • Safely operate lab or pilot plant equipment. Conduct experiments at the bench scale, in the pilot plant, in our manufacturing facilities, and at third-party locations including equipment vendors or analytical labs.  Maintain appropriate inventory levels of raw materials and laboratory supplies.
  • Process samples for internal testing and facilitate the expedition of sample orders through the manufacturing sites.
  • Organize, analyze, report, and present results through any appropriate means – summary tables, graphs, presentations, or written or oral reports. Maintain up-to-date reporting and documentation of project status using provided Morgan Stage Gate process tools.
  • Recommend and supervise trials and implementations of production improvements, including potential selection, purchase, installation, or repair of equipment. Assist in the design, setup, and repair of lab or pilot equipment as needed. 
  • Actively participate in scale-up activities, introducing new materials and processes to manufacturing. Train supervisors and operators as required to facilitate technology transfers and assist with the diagnosis of problems as needed.
  • Train, support, and supervise Development Technicians in their duties as assigned.
  • Possess or develop an in-depth understanding of material test methods, Morgan manufacturing processes, raw materials, and sales grades.
  • Interact effectively and professionally with colleagues at all levels within and external to the organization. Contribute to the success of the organization as an individual researcher, colleague in a matrix organization, and as a cross functional team member.
  • Utilize continuous improvement tools and stage gate concepts in problem solving and project work.
  • Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications and Education Requirements

    • A minimum of a B.Sci. in Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, or another engineering discipline is strongly preferred. An advanced degree in one of these areas is preferred. 
    • A combination of the above education with experience in a manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
    • Otherwise, classroom experience with materials engineering, ceramics, or relevant experience is preferred.

    Additional Requirements:

  • Able to effectively use Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Must have a fundamental understanding of and capability in utilizing statistical methods for data analysis.
  • Must be able to clearly present ideas, data, and analysis verbally and in writing.
  • Must have good time management, planning and negotiation skills.
  • Must adhere to all Company policies.
  • Must be willing to assist with the training and continued professional development of colleagues. 
  • Individual must be a:

    • Citizen of the United States, or
    • Permanent resident alien of the United States, or
    • Protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) as defined by 22CFR120.15 

    Physical Requirements:

    • The ability to sit or stand and use a computer for the majority of an 8-hour workday.
    • Must be able to lift 35 pounds.
    • Must be capable of navigating throughout an industrial site and conducting experiments or overseeing samples and/or production in a pilot plant or manufacturing site.
    • Must have the ability to travel within the US and internationally.
