Associate Director – Research and Development

This is accomplished through academics, research, direct-impact programming, developing healthy environments, community engagement, and more. We provide innovative tools to enhance the capacity of organizations that help children, adults, and communities and we offer support to KU faculty whose research relates to key areas of our mission.

    The Center for Certification and Competency-Based Education (C3Be) a center within the Achievement and Assessment Institute, seeks an Associate Director to lead research and development in the areas of competency-based education; workforce development and solutions; user-centered design; diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; educational equity; assessment, measurement and evaluation; instructional/learning design; systems design; military and public service agencies; and organizational leadership. This new leadership position will work under the direction of the Center’s Director and in collaboration with the associate director for competency-based education development and design.

    Job Description

    65% - Research and Development
    • Organize collaborative research teams and facilitate complex interdisciplinary proposals.
    • Coordinate writing, submission, and administration of local, state, federal and other funding opportunities.
    • Lead development of outreach and research development initiatives.
    • Serve as the primary liaison between C3Be and AAI Grants Management.
    • Provide direct support for proposal preparation to the investigators/teams.
    • Monitor relevant local, state, and federal agency priorities and develop/maintain contact with program officers for advance knowledge of new or revised funding programs and initiatives.
    • Research and communicate funding opportunities based on specific criteria aligned to the mission and vision of C3Be including opportunities within the private sector, foundations, the military, public service agencies; and other relevant funding sources.
    • Employ mixed methods research (qualitative and quantitative).
    • Develop project management plan for personnel to meet proposal deadlines and advise such on university/institute submission requirements including issues of compliance.
    • Provide technical editing and review of written materials.
    • Develop a comprehensive budget that supports the research needs based on the research plan and sponsor guidelines.
    • Provide strategic direction, leadership, and overall management, including budgets, of all research projects.
    • Assure safety, research integrity and compliance, and effectiveness and accountability of management for multiple projects.
    • Perform direct research as required/desired.
    • Expand C3Be’s research capacity and funding base.
    • Author/co-author scientific papers for presentation and publication.

    20% - Leadership
    • Lead a team of researchers, research development specialists, and other personnel/students.
    • Conceptualize, develop, and implement policies and procedures that effect the research and development functions of C3Be.
    • Represent C3Be both internally and externally.
    • Serve as an expert in the field to peer institutions/programs.
    • Be and remain cognizant of national trends and plans aligned with the mission and vision of C3Be.
    • Act on the Director’s behalf regarding the work of C3Be and the research and development efforts.
    • Collaborate and advise senior departmental/organization leadership on strategic organizational issues.

    10% - Human Resources & Operations
    • Supervise assigned personnel, including shared personnel within C3Be and other departments/units.
    • Prioritize individual and team’s work to ensure deadlines are met.
    • Direct day-to-day operations of the development and research personnel.
    • Provide leadership in compliance-related activities such as audits, reviews by internal and external entities, and requests for information.
    • Develop reports and identify metrics to evaluate efficiencies and suggest operational changes when warranted.
    • May have budgetary discretion and responsibility over the research and development funds.

    5% - Other Duties as Assigned

    Position Requirements

    • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), unclassified position.
    • This position allows for a remote or hybrid work location for well-qualified candidates. A remote position may be required to travel to Lawrence up to four times/year.
    • This position will require attendance at regularly scheduled meetings, onsite or through virtual platforms.

    Required Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in relevant discipline and seven years of experience OR doctoral degree in relevant discipline and five years of experience.
    • At least five years of experience applying mixed methods research methodology.
    • At least three years of managing complex research and evaluation projects.
    • At least two years of experience supervising personnel.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience leading and conducting research in areas related to the work of C3Be including, but not limited to competency-based education, workforce development design and solutions, analysis and visualization of outcomes and pathways, and research evaluation and design.
    • Experience in securing external funding via local, state, federal, or other sources.
    • Three or more years of supervising research personnel.
    • Established dissemination record including publications, presentations, and/or practitioner-oriented products.
    • Experience developing and managing project budgets.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as evidenced by application and interview.
    • Experience communicating with a range of stakeholders or clients.
    • Demonstrated record of successful oversight of grants and other funding opportunities.
