Research and Development Manager manages and directs the research and development programs to meet organizational needs and to capitalize on potential new products. Develops and implements research and development procedures and techniques. Being a Research and Development Manager oversees complex research projects, analyzes results and provides recommendations based on findings. Assesses the scope of research projects and ensures they are on time and within budget. Additionally, Research and Development Manager may require an advanced degree. Typically reports to a head of unit/director. The Research and Development Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes. To be a Research and Development Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 to 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Responsibilities
• Work with research scientists to prepare and develop new chemical products and/or processes
• Conduct analytical characterization following provided procedures
• Document and accurately record data in a laboratory notebook
• Assist in the design of experiments to understand and optimize production processes
• Communicate progress reports and results to colleagues, sponsors, and scientists.
• Present a capstone presentation covering work performed and findings during the internship.
• Attend group meetings to obtain a wider perspective on industrial research and development operations
Qualifications
• Currently pursuing an undergraduate chemistry or chemical engineering degree at an accredited college or university (Junior and Senior level students preferred)
• Completed general and organic chemistry classes
• Basic understanding of analytical methods (GC, HPLC, titrations, ICP, GC-MS, NMR)
• Knowledge of basic chemical calculations (formula weights, stoichiometry, limiting reagents, titrations)
• Desire to work in and learn about industrial laboratory research and development operations
