Research and Development Supervisor supervises activities in the research and development department. Oversees personnel who utilize established mathematical and scientific techniques to compile and analyze data and write technical reports detailing procedures, outcomes, and observations. Being a Research and Development Supervisor ensures proper procedure, and helps devise new development techniques. A level I supervisor is considered a working supervisor with little authority for personnel actions. Additionally, Research and Development Supervisor may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members. SUPERVISOR, SAFETY & PROCESS CONTROL

    POSITION SUMMARY: The position will be responsible for developing and implementing safety programs, policies, training, and procedures that promote a robust and proactive safety culture and the maintenance of a healthy work environment. Serves as an advisor in the development and execution of consistent safety and environmental management programs. The position supports Change Control process, Corrective and Preventative Action (CAPA) system, nonconforming material process, supplier qualification process, internal audit process and third-party audit process.

    FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

    RESPONSIBILITIES Satisfactorily performing and/or achieving the following Responsibilities (as directed by the Manager, Environmental Health &Safety) are essential duties of the job. 

    • Serves on the Company’s Employee Safety Committee. Schedules regular meetings of the Committee, prepares the meeting agendas, and circulates the meeting’s minutes.
    • Promotes a “zero incident” culture.
    • Supports and completes internal safety audits on a regular basis to detect existing or potential risks and hazards and ensure recommended corrective or preventive measures are completed in a timely manner.
    • Supports and completes safety training for employees and for contractors and subcontractors as needed. 
    • Organizes and manages teams to identify and implement safety improvements.
    • Prepares and submits required environmental health and safety regulatory reporting or other related reports as requested by management.
    • Assists emergency response team to ensure appropriate training in emergency response, spill response, disaster preparedness, and crisis management. Ensure drills are conducted and equipment is in a ready state.
    • Participates in onboarding of new employees to ensure new employees understand the safety requirements.
    • Conducts OSHA-acceptable fit testing for respiratory usage or coordinate fit testing by a third party.
    • Conducts ergonomic assessments and train employees on proper body mechanics or coordinate through a third party as directed by facility director.
    • Keeps manager updated on root cause analysis on incidents and injuries to ensure corrective actions are put in place to avoid future incidents.
    • Participates in the Crisis Management Committee and Teams to coordinate and support Thorne's Business Continuity and Crisis Management planning and activities.
    • Coordinates with state and federal health and safety agencies per the manager.
    • Maintains safety files and records,
    • Coordinates required environmental testing and maintains required records.
    • Determines proper disposal of products slated for destruction.

    • Reviews and provides feedback on chemicals being introduced into the facility, as well as maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
    • Ensures compliance with cGMP, FDA, OSHA, NSF, and all other regulatory requirements, in accordance with company policy.

    What You Need:

    • Bachelor’s degree in sciences required or may substitute 4 years of related experience.
    • 3-5 years of environmental health and safety experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
    • Experience interacting with the South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration
    • Certifications in CPR/AED/First Aid.
    • Experience implementing Behavior Based Safety Observation systems.
    • Ability to influence others to perform the essential duties of the positions safely and to report unsafe conditions.
    • Possesses strong analytical skills relating to Root Cause Analysis and Risk Analysis.
    • Available to work evenings and/or weekends if an incident occurs.
    • Possesses good working knowledge of industrial hygiene, chemical management, and environmental health and safety program requirements and management.
    • Develops and delivers on assigned objectives within requested timeframes.
    • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Certified proper chemical segregation and appropriate retention and disposal of all hazardous material.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS – Being able to meet the Physical Demands of the job is an essential duty of the job.

    • Being able to physically wear required Personal Protective Equipment to operate in different areas.
    • Ability to walk the manufacturing, warehousing, and shipping areas throughout the position location. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to twist, bend, and stoop as needed for this position. Must be able to work in an environment where dust may accumulate.
