Research and Development Supervisor supervises activities in the research and development department. A level I supervisor is considered a working supervisor with little authority for personnel actions. Additionally, Research and Development Supervisor may require a bachelor's degree in area of specialty. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members.     JOB TITLE:   

    Research Scientist, Assistant - Light Microscopy Specialist  

    JOB PURPOSE:     

    The University of Wyoming is a leading research institution dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and innovation. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Scientist to join our research support team in a new core facility, the Center for Advanced Scientific Instrumentation (CASI). This facility provides state-of-the-art microscopy tools and expertise to support cutting-edge research across various scientific disciplines. The person in this position will play a pivotal role in facilitating groundbreaking research by providing expertise in light microscopy techniques, maintaining and operating advanced microscopy equipment, and collaborating with researchers from diverse fields. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in microscopy, excellent communication skills, and a passion for advancing scientific discovery.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

    • Operate and maintain a variety of advanced light microscopy systems, including confocal, multi-photon, light-sheet, and widefield microscopes.
    • Provide training and technical support to researchers, ensuring they can effectively use the microscopy equipment.
    • Collaborate with researchers to develop customized imaging solutions for their specific experimental needs.
    • Assist researchers in image acquisition and provide guidance on data analysis and interpretation.
    • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and quality control checks on microscopy equipment.
    • Troubleshoot and coordinate repairs with equipment vendors when necessary.
    • Maintain detailed records of microscopy experiments and user schedules.
    • Conduct workshops, seminars, and training sessions to educate researchers on microscopy techniques and best practices.
    • Ensure that all safety protocols and regulations are followed in the microscopy core facility.
    • Manage and track hazardous materials and chemicals used in microscopy experiments.

    COMPETENCIES:  

    To excel in this role, you should possess the following competencies: 

    • Working knowledge of the fundamental principles of light microscopy and its applications.
    • Advanced proficiency in the application of light microscopy, including sample preparation and imaging.
    • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and clients.
    • Familiarity with image acquisition and analysis software.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders including faculty, staff, and students. 
    • Strong analytical skills to identify issues, propose solutions, and navigate complex situations. 

    REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: 

    This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

    • Education: Master’s Degree in a relevant field. 
    • Experience: 2-3 years of relevant experience using modern light microscopy imaging systems. 
    • Other requirements:  Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

    • Ph.D. (preferred) in a relevant scientific discipline.
    • Strong background in light microscopy techniques, including experience with confocal and multi-photon microscopy.
    • Proficiency in image analysis software and programming languages (e.g., ImageJ/FIJI, MATLAB, Python).
    • Prior experience in operating and maintaining microscopy equipment is highly desirable.
