    Team Description:
    The AI Foundations team plays a central role in bringing our vision for AI at Capital One to life. We work closely with academia, product, technology, and business leaders to apply the latest AI advancements to our business.

    Responsibilities:
    As an Applied Researcher I, you will:
    - Collaborate with a diverse team of data scientists, software engineers, machine learning engineers, and product managers to develop AI-powered products that transform how customers interact with their finances.
    - Utilize a wide range of technologies such as Pytorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning, VectorDBs, and more to uncover insights from large volumes of numeric and textual data.
    - Build AI foundation models throughout the development lifecycle, from design to training, evaluation, validation, and implementation.
    - Conduct high-impact applied research to integrate the latest AI developments into the next generation of customer experiences.
    - Use your interpersonal skills to effectively communicate the complexity of your work and translate it into tangible business goals.

    - Proven ability to come up with high-quality ideas and improve upon existing ideas in machine learning.
    - Self-driven with the ability to pursue and execute a research agenda.

    Basic Qualifications:
    - Currently holds or is in the process of obtaining a PhD, or has an M.S. degree with at least 2 years of experience in Applied Research.

    Preferred Qualifications (choose correct set based on focus of role):
    - PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
    - LLM degree with a focus on NLP or a Master's degree with 5 years of industrial NLP research experience.
    - Multiple publications on pre-training of large language models, SSL techniques, and model pre-training optimization.
    - Member of a team that has trained a large language model from scratch (10B parameters, 500B tokens) and publications in deep learning theory.
    - PhD focus on topics in geometric deep learning, with experience working on graph models with more than 50 million nodes.
    - PhD focused on optimizing training of very large deep learning models, with expertise in sparsification, quantization, and other training optimization methods.
    - PhD focused on guiding LLMs with further tasks, demonstrating knowledge of principles of transfer learning and model adaptation.
    - Publications studying tokenization, data quality, dataset curation, or labeling.

    Salary Range:
    The annual salary for this role varies based on location:
    - New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $230,000 - $262,500 for Applied Researcher I.
    - San Francisco, California (Hybrid On-Site): $243,700 - $278,100 for Applied Researcher I.
