    Special Note
    This is a full-time, overtime eligible, project position on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. This project position is grant funded through August 31, 2025 and is dependent on continued federal funding. This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules.
    Position Purpose
    This position is responsible for providing academic advising support to assist students with disabilities in planning their educational career, learning skills necessary for academic success, and for connecting students to campus resources and services in support of goal attainment. Position responsibilities include building and monitoring the academic progress of an assigned caseload, coaching and advising, assessing the need for academic support services and triaging when appropriate, providing direct support services to students in individual and group settings, and working collaboratively with TRIO peers to help meet grant objectives. A core component of this position is to build partnerships with faculty and staff across campus to help advocate for and support students with disabilities at Evergreen.

    The Evergreen State College has a federal grant from the United States Department of Education to run a TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. The TRIO SSS program's goals are to increase the retention, academic performance, and graduation rates of students with disabilities who may also be first-generation and limited-income. Federal TRIO SSS programs are designed to assist students with reaching their goals using student success strategies and interventions. The program serves 100 Evergreen students each year. Through TRIO SSS, students receive individualized attention and support with services, including academic advising, financial aid guidance, writing support, instruction in basic study skills, career and graduate school counseling, personal support, mentoring, and cultural enrichment activities.
    Nature and Scope
    Essential Functions
    • Build, maintain, and monitor a caseload of TRIO project participants who are students with documented disabilities through Access Services; including collecting and maintaining data on student contacts and academic progress.
    • Perform comprehensive academic needs assessment of project participants and develop and implement individualized academic plans to meet student needs.
    • Provide academic advising, career and graduate school guidance, financial aid counseling and writing support and coordinate these efforts with other student services offices.
    • Act as a liaison to Access Services for students with disabilities.
    • Develop and maintain working relationships with faculty and staff and guide them to resources on campus and in the greater Olympia community as they work to meet the academic needs of students with disabilities.
    • Support the planning, coordination, and delivery of the TRIO courses.
    • Develop and present workshops on topics, such as study skills, writing, or financial aid.
    • Participate in outreach activities that support the recruitment of TRIO eligible students into the TRIO program.
    • Assist in planning and implementation of social and cultural enrichment activities.
    • Cultivate an environment of safety and sense of belonging for students with disabilities who may be learning, exploring, and defining and/or developing a disability identity.
    • Collaborate with program staff to evaluate the project's effectiveness.
    • Transport program participants to events using college vehicles.

    • Familiarity with assistive technology.
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment, exhibit resiliency under pressure, set priorities, achieve goals, assess complex situations, and maintain strong ethical and professional standards.
    • Ability to manage multiple, competing task and prioritize projects while maintaining attention to details.
    • Ability to engage in effective conflict resolution.
    • Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality and demonstrate tact and discretion.
    • Strong computer skills for communication, scheduling, and reporting.
    • Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends as needed.
    • Ability to drive and operate a college vehicle.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Master's degree.
    • Two years of full-time professional work experience providing academic support and educational planning, teaching, or tutoring services.
    Desired Qualifications
    • Experience directly serving students with disabilities.
    • Experience working in TRIO and academic support programs in a higher education setting.
    • Experience working with a diverse population of college students, such as individuals with disabilities first-generation students, or individuals with limited-income.
    Conditions of Employment
    • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
    • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
    • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
    • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
    • Must be able to occasionally work evenings and weekends as needed.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license and be in compliance with Evergreen's Travel Policy and eligible driver requirements.
