  • JOB SUMMARY:

    The Student Academic Advocate is responsible for administration of all matters related to tribal youth students in the program, including the following: selection, monitoring, scholarship administration and intervention if required. This position geared around supporting students and assisting in removing barriers that will allow students to be successful. The primary goal of the Student Academic Advocate is to provide support and structures to students to help them graduate.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Essential functions may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list, but rather to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may or may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

    • Assist in the creation of an Education Plan for each youth in the program.
    • Maintains contact with students on a regular basis.
    • Track students’ grades, attendance, and behavior on a regular basis.
    • Identify potential problems and intervene as necessary to ensure student success.
    • Will be the truancy officer in coordination with Tribal Police and/or local Sherriff’s Department, School District and District Attorney’s Office.
    • Identify and actively case manage students who struggle significantly with attendance.
    • Work closely with guidance counselors at each school to ensure student success.
    • Participate in youth and other community events in order to meet and establish rapport with students and parents.
    • Engage parents/guardians through regular phone calls, meetings and home visits.
    • Assist youth in exploring opportunities in work-based exploration and community service activities such as site visits, job shadowing, job fairs and internships.
    • Coordinate youth activities that encourage group participation as well as collaboration and positive communication with other individuals and groups.
    • Facilitate enrichment activities designed to improve attendance and academic performance of students.
    • Able to work early morning hours (for transporting youth when needed), after school hours, take calls from youth when needed, and able to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
    • Travels as necessary to accomplish program and tribal goals and objectives.
    • Be a positive role model at all times.
    • Maintains professional behavior with positive representation of Coyote Valley while on and off the clock.
    • Other duties may be assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the essential duties and responsibilities satisfactorily.     • Associates Degree in education related field or able to demonstrate equivalent work experience (High School Diploma or GED required).
    • Valid California Driver’s License and insurable.
    • Must have reliable transportation.
    • CPR Certified or be able to obtain with the first 90 days of employment.

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

    • Proficiency in Microsoft programs.
    • The ability to work independently.
    • Be able to multitask and take direction well.
    • Able to deal with crisis in an appropriate manner.
    • Able to demonstrate effective and diplomatic client service and communication skills, which includes contact with staff, tribal youth and parents/guardians, and other agencies.
    • Able to track, monitor, and report performance.

    Language Skills

    • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and orally.

    Reasoning Ability

    • Must have the ability to deal effectively and interact well with the customers and employees.
    • Must have the ability to resolve problems/conflicts in a diplomatic and tactful manner.
