Respiratory Therapist - Home Care works in a home care environment and assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Being a Respiratory Therapist - Home Care treats patients with pressure breathing, mechanical ventilation, positive pressure breathing, humidity/medicated aerosol therapy, medical gas administration, pulmonary drainage procedures, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Also measures the lung capacity of a patient to determine if there is an impairment. Additionally, Respiratory Therapist - Home Care operates oxygen and other therapeutic gas and mist equipment. Requires a credential of Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Requires an associate's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Respiratory Therapist provides direct patient care in all aspects of respiratory therapy including diagnostic testing, patient evaluation and assessment, and administration of therapeutic respiratory therapy. Other duties involve scheduling patients, patient follow-up, supply management, and troubleshooting equipment. This position must function autonomously and often will be the only staff on duty for the Cardiopulmonary Department. This position provides “on-call” coverage after hours for the department. All respiratory therapists work under the direction of the ordering or supervising physician.
Requirements
This position requires an Associate's degree in Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). The individual also must be a current member of the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), a current Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP), a current Basic Life Support (BLS) provider, a current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider, and a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider.
