Respiratory Therapist - Home Care works in a home care environment and assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Being a Respiratory Therapist - Home Care treats patients with pressure breathing, mechanical ventilation, positive pressure breathing, humidity/medicated aerosol therapy, medical gas administration, pulmonary drainage procedures, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Also measures the lung capacity of a patient to determine if there is an impairment. Additionally, Respiratory Therapist - Home Care operates oxygen and other therapeutic gas and mist equipment. Requires a credential of Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Requires an associate's degree. Typically reports to a manager. Summary of Position: Responsible for supervision of all certified respiratory therapists. Performs basic/advanced therapeutic procedures (i.e. nebulized medication/mechanical ventilization). Coordinates patient care needs with physicians/nursing staff. Monitors/evaluates pertinent information from patient's charts, and computes/prepares medications using basic principles of metric system.
Minimum Qualifications: Requirements as specified for Registered Respiratory Therapist; RRT from NBRC, AAS degree and license through the New York State Education Department. Required to be Registered with one year of their date of hire. They are also required to obtain ACLS, & NRP. CPR certified. Certification from NBRC required within 1 yr from date of hire.
