Retail Store Manager - Museum plans and directs the day-to-day operations of a retail store within a museum. Develops strategies to improve customer service, drive store sales, and increase profitability. TITLE: Cultural/Folklore Interpreter and Guide
REPORTS TO: Managing Director- Vermilionville Living History Museum
CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time
SALARY: starting at $10.00 an hour
SCHEDULE: Shifts start at 9:45am and end at 4:15pm on most days,
Tuesday through Sunday.
Main Responsibilities: This person is responsible for providing accurate historical interpretation while demonstrating a traditional craft to visitors of all ages and backgrounds. This individual must work in period-correct costuming -provided by Vermilionville.
1. Provide demonstration of a craft/s or music of the Atakapas Region between 1765 and 1890 for guests of all ages and backgrounds. This may also include ‘odds and ends’ jobs around the village, also performed in an accurate historical impression.
2. Provide historical information of the craft or music, and historical buildings presented in an interesting manner to guests from a variety of backgrounds and ages. Material must be age appropriate.
3. Understand the cultural and historical aspects of Acadiana and be prepared to lead guests on a tour of our museum space.
4. Follow daily rotations when multiple groups are visiting the property.
5. Assist Museum Operations with summer camp programs.
6. Assist Museum Operations in preparation for special event days.
7. Participate in tasks outside of regular scope during special event days.
8. Protect the artifacts in your home from visitors touching them.
9. Conduct craft workshops for visitors on an as-needed basis.
10. Attend all interpreter staff meetings and training sessions.
11. Follow all policies and procedures in the personnel manual.
12. Keep your work area clean, and free of non-historically accurate items.
13. Keep all ‘non-period’ items out of sight of our guests.
Qualifications
- Excellent public speaking abilities.
- Must be able to learn to demonstrate one or more historic crafts, trades, or skills.
- Must have excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to work in the various weather conditions of South Louisiana.
- Must be able to move unassisted through the village, carrying 20lbs.
- Preference given to those that speak French.
- Preference given to those with knowledge and experience in the Creole, African, or Native American cultures.

- Artisan has the option to sell products for commission in the gift shop when constructed with own materials and tools.
