Rigger facilitates the movement and positioning of heavy equipment, materials and cargo. Sets up rigging, slings, pulleys, winches, dollies and ropes to safely maneuver loads. Being a Rigger coordinates moving activities with others using hand or other signals. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Additionally, Rigger may be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. Requires 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks.     The Rigger is responsible for the safe operation of all activities associated with movement, staging and transport of heavy construction materials including attaching pieces of heavy machinery, connecting the parts together and anchoring pieces to fixed structures with bolts and clamps. They also control and manage all the movement of the machinery while it is operational, and then take it all apart when the job is finished.

    Duties

    • Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure safety of workers and materials.
    • Test rigging to ensure safety and reliability.
    • Attach loads to rigging to provide support or prepare them for moving, using hand and power tools.
    • Select gear such as cables, pulleys, and winches, according to load weights and sizes, facilities, and work schedules.
    • Control movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces, using chain-falls, gin poles, gallows frames, and other equipment.
    • Tilt, dip, and turn suspended loads to maneuver over, under, or around obstacles, using multi-point suspension techniques.
    • Fabricate, set up, and repair rigging, supporting structures, hoists, and pulling gear, using hand and power tools.
    • Manipulate rigging lines, hoists, and pulling gear to move or support materials such as large steel beams, pipes and platforms.
    • Attach pulleys and blocks to fixed overhead structures such as beams, ceilings, and gin pole booms, using bolts and clamps.
    • Clean, dismantle and store rigging equipment after use.

    Requirements

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Must be NCCCO certified Level 1 minimum
    • 2 years minimum experience as a rigger
    • Proficient working knowledge of all rigging equipment
    • Able to inspect rigging equipment to ensure it is in good working order
    • Able to assess each load and select proper equipment for the job
    • Solid math skills for calculating load requirements
    • Physically capable of working in demanding conditions
    • Able to sit, stand, bend, and lift 50 lbs on a regular basis
    • Excellent vision and hearing
    • Not afraid of heights or climbing ladders, scaffolding, etc.
    • Fluent in English; bilingual a plus
    • Reliable and hardworking with a team-player attitude
