    Under general supervision, review, investigate, and process reports and claims concerning general liability, automobile liability and physical damage, property, and workers' compensation claims of AMERICAN employees; analyze claim circumstances to determine merit and estimate probable/potential financial impact; respond to inquiries from third parties, employees, rehabilitation workers, doctors and legal professionals. Arrange estimates, disability evaluation appointments and maintain medical control. Approve payment for repairs, legal services, medical services, temporary and permanent disability allowances and awards. Analyze investigative reports, police reports and pursue subrogation recovery.

    • Types and transcribes all of the Department's correspondence for distribution and for maintaining records. Corrects spelling and grammatical errors for all correspondence.
    • Evaluates and monitors certificates of insurance and insurance policies, amendments or endorsements, and departmental correspondence files for the company and third party vendors in a neat, orderly, timely and confidential manner.
    • Answers telephones, takes messages, refers callers to appropriate personnel, sends and receives facsimile and serves as departmental receptionist for Risk Management Department. Maintains an inventory of office supplies in a neat, orderly, timely, and efficient manner.
    • Maintains lists of rolling stock (automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment) and prepares reports of additions, deletions, and other changes. Also arranges for the purchase of license plates as required and maintains a list of drivers to obtain motor vehicle reports.
    • Collects data and prepares quarterly and annual reports of workers' compensation payments and reserves, by claim.
    • Handles general liability, automobile liability and physical damage, property and workers' compensation caseload from inception to final settlement, including initial investigation of new claims to include documented statements.
    • Identifies and maintains claims to help determine the company's liability and workers compensation losses. Prepares and/or assists in preparation of insurance claims, such as workers' compensation, automobile accidents, general liability, etc.
    • Monitors medical and legal issues of claim files.
    • Manages claims by investigation of injuries and consulting with other professionals such as case managers, physicians and attorneys.
    • Facilitates, on appropriate workers compensation claims, follow-up with maximum medical improvement, impairment rating, functional capacity evaluation, second opinion and management of catastrophic injury cases on designated cases.
    • Maintains direct contact with claimant and/or their representative throughout the claim and to have final releases executed when necessary.
    • Utilizes available systems to track and manage claims and identify trends by department and employee classification.
    • Corresponds with Occupational Health Nurse on workers' compensation claims and assists with coordination of referrals to medical specialist and other providers to ensure appropriate and cost-effective care.
    • Monitors and tracks lost time injuries and ensures indemnity benefits are paid appropriately.
    • Obtains and reviews estimates and legal and medical invoices for accuracy and approves payment of invoices.
    • Works with the Human Resource Division, Safety Department, Occupational Health Nurses, and others to ensure efficient handling of claims.
    • Corresponds and/or meets company attorneys, employees and/or departments to advise of issues and opportunities.
    • Assists the departmental manager in preparing special reports as required.
    • Sets priorities to assure all work is done as needed.
    • Performs job duties with minimal supervision.
    • Fills in for Treasury and Risk Admin Specialist and assists Senior Vice President of Finance as needed.
    • Makes decisions in a manner consistent with the Company's Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Policy.
    • Keeps work area clean and orderly. Knows safety rules that apply to the safety of others and to personal safety. Reports malfunction of equipment to proper authority. Performs other work as instructed by supervision.
    • Provides ongoing support and system administration tasks for Risk Management Information Systems. Includes administration of reports, minor programing, trouble shooting, and dashboard configuration. Acts as an internal resource for user issues.
    • Gathers data for insurance renewals and bonds.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Must be a current licensed adjuster for the state of Alabama or become licensed within 6 months of being assigned to the job. Proof of licensure is required.
    2. Must exhibit three (3) years prior work experience adjusting general liability, automobile liability and physical damage, property and Alabama workers' compensation claims. OR Must exhibit a bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Human Resources, Finance, Accounting, or other Business related degree from an accredited four-year college or university. Proof of degree required. A transcript or diploma would be acceptable and must be provided.
    3. Must be knowledgeable of Federal and State laws regarding how workers' compensation claims are handled, processed and who is covered.
    4. Must complete thirty (30) hours of training every two years on curriculum topics noted by resolutions and changes in related State and Federal laws, specifically Alabama workers' compensation laws.
    5. Must exhibit a thorough knowledge of workers' compensation laws for the state of Alabama, including permanent disability and vocational rehabilitation.
    6. Must exhibit the ability to analyze situations and problems and determine alternative solutions to issues presented.
    7. Must exhibit knowledge of subrogation.
    8. Must possess initiative, good judgment and tact in order to be able to work with a variety of people in multiple departments in order to arrive at acceptable solutions to problems and to implement solutions.
    9. Must exhibit attention to detail.
    10. Must exhibit the ability to work under stress.
    11. Must exhibit good organizational skills.
    12. Must exhibit a general understanding of risk management and insurance operations.
    13. Must exhibit prior experience in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database and claims management software such as Word, Excel, Access, Origami Risk, etc.
    14. Must exhibit ability to learn technical information such as being able to read, understand, and interpret insurance policies and other business contracts. Weight will be given to experience, grades and courses related to clerical assignments.
    15. Must exhibit a general knowledge of the principles of accounting.
    16. Must exhibit good interpersonal skills and must exhibit the ability to cooperate well with others.
    17. Must exhibit good oral and written communication skills. Must exhibit knowledge of punctuation and business letter formats. Good command of grammar and spelling.
    18. Must exhibit record of punctuality and good attendance.
    19. Must exhibit the ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately.
    20. Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations.
    21. Must exhibit the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job duties.
    22. Must exhibit the ability to work with confidential information and maintain confidentiality.
    23. Must exhibit the ability to work independently or in a team environment.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    1. Exhibit more than three (3) years prior work experience adjusting general liability, automobile liability and physical damage, property and workers' compensation claims handling in an industrial environment.
    2. Exhibit field recognized certification such as ARM (Associate in Risk Management), AIC (Associate in Claims), WCS (Workers' Comp Specialist).

    ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS

    • Sitting required for long periods of time throughout the day to perform desk activities including writing, keyboard, appropriate documentation, using phone, etc.
    • Standing and walking are required within the office area, to copier, to and from other offices in the building, etc.
    • Climb stairs required within "Y" building (elevator available), to enter some buildings and offices within the plant, or when away from the plant at conferences, etc.
    • Balancing required while on steps.
    • Stooping and crouching are occasionally required to obtain files from low file drawers.
    • Forward-reaching required constantly to perform desk activities, to use telephone, keyboard, paperwork, documentation, etc. Overhead reaching required for upper shelves and file cabinets.
    • Bended-reaching required to access some file drawers, etc.
    • Handling is required to perform desk activities, use telephone, retrieve files, etc.
    • Use of fingers required for telephone controls, use calculator, keyboard, data entry, writing, etc.
    • Talking is required for co-worker communication, on telephone, and person to person, etc.
    • Vision is required for accuracy of data input, appropriateness and completeness of documentation, etc.
    • Hearing is required for telephone usage and one-to-one communication within the office.
    • Lifting and carrying required for objects that usually weigh 10 pounds or less - files, records, books, adding machine, etc. Lifting and carrying 20 pounds maximum (computer paper) required. Some assistance may be obtained if necessary.
    • Pushing and pulling with maximum of up to 10 Pounds force required to open and close file drawers.
