Risk Management Director - Healthcare develops and administers risk management programs. Creates and modifies policies to comply with safety legislation, JCAHO, HIPAA, and industry practices. Being a Risk Management Director - Healthcare coordinates and develops hospital-wide programs for quality patient care and risk-free services. Acts as the liaison to attorneys, insurance companies, and individuals. Additionally, Risk Management Director - Healthcare investigates any incidences that may result in an asset loss. Oversees insurance designed to protect the health system from loss. Collects information related to the claims and lawsuits made against the health system. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Risk Management Director - Healthcare typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.   • EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor's Degree in Business, or Occupational Safety and Health, or related field required.
    • Requires six (6) years of practical experience in risk management including loss prevention and safety program development with at least three (3) years in a manager level leadership role.
    • In lieu of education requirements above, consideration will be given to individuals with ten (10) years of practical experience in risk management including loss prevention and safety program development with at least three (3) years in a manager level leadership role.
    • Must have experience in risk management policy development, bid processes and negotiations of all types of business insurance contracts.
    • Requires thorough knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations and the ability to become familiar with MIOSHA, Fire Codes and other Tribal, Local and State regulations.
    • Must obtain/maintain a LEVEL "A" license from EPA Underground Storage Tanks (UST) training within first Thirty (30) days of employment.
    • Requires well-developed computer, organizational, problem solving and communication skills.
    • Requires Workers' Compensation claims handling experience.
    • Safety related experience in a casino and/or tribal environment strongly preferred.
    • Certification as a Safety Professional or Associate in Risk Management (ARM) preferred but not required.
    • Requires a valid driver's license and insurability through our insurance provider.

    SUMMARY

    The Director of Risk Management works under the direction of the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with indirect working relationships to the GTB Governmental Tribal Manager, EDC General Managers, Resort General Manager and the Grand Traverse Economic Development Corporation (GTED) CEO. This position is responsible for risk management, safety, and Grand Traverse Band (GTB) insurances (e.g. property, casualty, auto, general liability and other insurances). The Director is responsible for leading the processes for identifying, analyzing, managing, monitoring, and reporting on key risk management issues. The Director is also responsible for providing a systematic and disciplined approach to promoting risk compliance and best practices across all levels of the Tribal Government and its businesses.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Develops and implements all safety and accident prevention programs and strategies to reduce or eliminate occupational accidents, injuries, and/or financial losses to the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians. Collaborates and advises with CEO's, GM's and Governmental Tribal Manager on all matters involving loss control and risk mitigation.
    • Reviews risk management incidents, conducts root-cause analysis, recommends and implements risk management solutions such as safety and security policies and procedures, business continuity plans or recovery measures.
    • Manages relationships with insurance vendors, brokers, third party claim adjusters, underwriters, etc.
    • Responsible for the administration of GTB insurance programs (Property/Casualty, General Liability, Auto, Inland Marine, Crime/Fiduciary, and Workman's Compensation). Examines insurance protection to secure greatest coverage of company assets at lowest cost.
    • Oversees regulations regarding Underground and Above Ground Storage Tanks located at convenience stores, casinos and other Tribal locations.
    • Oversees organizational and departmental safety/risk training needs. Reviews or prepares reports on training programs, which may contain a cost analysis of the programs.
    • Reviews and/or conducts field investigations of all accidents that cause personal injury or property loss to the Tribe.
    • Work in conjunction with the CEO's, GM's or Governmental Tribal Manager on evacuation drills for all properties.
    • Prepare required tribal, county, state and federal reports, as needed.
    • Consult with claims adjusters and/or medical unit representatives to resolve problems with on-the-job injuries and recurring illnesses.
    • Prepare all summary reports required by OSHA, EPA and other federal and state agencies.
    • Receive all property/casualty incidents, maintain claim files and file claims as necessary.
    • Assure company compliance with federal or state safety or operation regulations.
    • Provide recommendations to the CEO's, GM's and Governmental Tribal Manager on safety, security and alarm systems on all new construction projects.
    • Provide recommendations on insurance provisions in major contracts engaged in by the Grand Traverse Band and its businesses.
    • Willingness to cross-train and provide support in related areas of operations.
    • Other job duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Directly supervises the Safety Specialist position.
    • Reinforcement of policies and procedures.
    • Completes and directs department budget and expenditures.
    • Responsible for employee hiring, termination, corrective action, job performance reviews, scheduling, training, Kronos approval, and other employment related matters.
    • Maintain in-depth knowledge of all departmental operations.
    • Maintaining safety and security in the department including all emergency responses and reports.
    • Maintain open lines of communication with other departments and within the department itself.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Must have outstanding written and verbal communications skills.

    • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect.
    • Exceptional detail and follow-up skills.
    • Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
    • Work requires proficiency in computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft office products and database applications.
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of loss control techniques.
    • Knowledge of the safety rules and regulations mandated by federal and state law, as well as an excellent working knowledge of all applicable titles of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
    • Knowledge of occupational safety policies and procedures.
    • A working understanding of Safety, Environmental and Hygiene regulations.
    • Familiarity with OSHA and MIOSHA standards and ability to apply standards to casino and hotel operations.
    • Familiarity with workers' compensation claim procedures.
    • Basic understanding of medical terminology to interpret medical reports and communicate with health care providers.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Department Managers, Executive Management, Casino Management, and outside vendors.
    • Analytical skills to assess injury data and develop action plans to target reductions in problem areas.
    • Ability to speak effectively before groups both large and small.
    • Ability to develop and implement training programs.
    • Ability to prepare reports and make appropriate recommendations.

    TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Must be physically able to operate a variety of job-related machines and/or office equipment. Must be able to move or carry job-related objects or materials up to 30 pounds. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary or office environment work.


    TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

    Requires the ability to interact with people (i.e., staff, supervisors, general public and elected officials) beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency. Incumbents may face strong adversarial situations on a regular basis and must often give negative information to department heads.


    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. Some deadlines involved, so there is time pressure on occasion. Local travel to various properties is involved, as well as out of town, overnight travel on occasion is required. Although primarily an 8-5 job, one must be flexible and willing to work the occasional evening, weekend, or holiday.

Must be able to work flexible hours and to take on additional responsibilities when asked. Must adhere to company policies regarding strict confidentiality.
