Risk Management Specialist provides coordination of the UnityPoint Health-Waterloo Region/Market Risk Management Program. Supports the risk management department and risk management program while performing standard, advanced and confidential work. Under the direction of the Director of Risk management and/or Manager of Risk Management, provides and assists with Risk Management activities including receipt, review, evaluate event reports, education, investigate risk management concerns, medical device reporting, coordination/reporting occurrences of concern to Manager and Administration, perform risk assessments as delegated. As directed, other responsibilities related to Risk management may be assigned to this staff member to include but not limited to supports of claims and insurance processes for insured providers.
Responsibilities- Recommends, presents, assists with educational programs related to risk management for associates, volunteers, students.
- Analyzes, prepares and presents risk management reports.
- Special studies, investigations, etc. as indicated and directed by manager.
- Assures compliance with DNV standards, state and federal regulations regarding risk management
- Coordinates medical device and product recall reporting program and submits information to Director/Manager.
- Assists with the management of the event report monitoring system. Identify high risk, problem prone factors. Provide consultation for risk reduction techniques.
- Reviews and revises risk management, standard operation procedures and/or policies/procedures. This includes both general and departmental specific.
- Investigates incidents of potential liability concerns.
- Reports significant occurrences to director/manager.
- As directed prepares forms for financial reimbursement/payment for injuries occurred on Allen property.
- Occasionally available for consultation and/or investigation during “off duty hours.
- May assist with the investigation components of a Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Develop and maintain administrative office procedures and systems including telephone triage, filing systems, scheduling, document processing and distribution/routing systems, integrity of department shared drive content and processes, and memorialization of risk management activities.
- Maintains current and accurate Risk Management legal files.
- Accept, log and disseminate subpoenas received on behalf of the Medical Center and insured providers. Coordinate contact with relevant parties and facilitates communication necessary to respond to subpoenas.
- Facilitate obtaining data reports and providing risk management analytics for trending and risk assessment prioritization.
- Assist with developing presentations specific to risk management activities.
- Maintain, revise and update risk management TEAMS site for content and timeliness of material posted.
- Notifies Revenue Integrity when patient accounts need adjustment.
- Provides technical support for new and current users of Event Reporting system.
- Assists with coordinating lawsuits administratively, including processing summons, complaints, interrogatories, production requests, deposition scheduling, discovery requests and other attorney requests as needed.
- Serves as a member of the Corporate Risk Management team and RL User Team.
- Assists with Regulatory investigations as directed and associated action plans in conjunction with Compliance team.
- Assists with Risk Assessments as directed.
Qualifications- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- 5 years’ experience in clinical nursing. Three years previous risk management experience preferred.
- RN Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa.
- Flexibility with schedule.
- Knowledge of general clinical aspects of patient care.
- Able to assess complex issues, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and exhibit good judgement
- Strong time management skills.
- Close attention to detail.
- Knowledge and understanding of hospital and other relevant policies and procedures related to patient care and safety.
- Knowledge of healthcare delivery system.
- Knowledge of software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.
- Must have accurate word processing/computer skills.
- Must have excellent verbal/written communication skills, analytical skills, and must exhibit good judgement.
