Position Summary:
Reports to deputy warden of operations. Responsible for duties involving general environmental health, fire safety and risk management program in compliance American Correctional Association Standards, Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) directives.
Essential Functions:
1. Conduct monthly inspections of all areas of the facility to ensure compliance with agency Environmental Health and Safety Manual applicable American Correctional Association (ACA) standards and relevant federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
2. Provide on-site monitoring of the daily institutional operations to ensure compliance with applicable safety and environmental health program standards.
3. Investigates reported hazards, employee and inmate accidents, vehicle accidents, fires, lightening and other weather damage and other conditions and situations which could affect health, safety and welfare of employees and inmates and communicates such information to the warden, in a timely manner.
4. Monitors all aspects of the workers’ compensation program with the stated goal of reducing employee claims and returning to work in a timely manner.
5. Develops and maintains accurate files and records for the facility relating to all aspects of the agency safety, environmental health, risk management, workers’ compensation, and ACA accreditation program.
6. Monitors employees and inmate workers to ensure utilization of appropriate personal protective
equipment consistent with requirements in the agency Environmental Health and Safety Manual and applicable Material Safety Data Sheet requirements.
7. Ensure adequate fire protection services are provided and available to the facility; ensure availability of fire hoses or extinguishers at appropriate locations throughout the facility.
8. Perform fire inspections and testing of equipment on a frequently scheduled basis and schedule outside vendors for equipment inspections in coordination with facility warden as required.
9. Communicate and report safety, environmental health, risk management and workers’ compensation concerns to the warden.
10. Prepare evaluative reports; recommend improvements and modifications to resolve problems and deficiencies; and prepare responses to requests for information related to unit operations and activities.
It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.
Education and Experience Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of corrections or related experience in an adult correctional environment or related field required. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Valid driver’s license in the state of Mississippi with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
Post Hire Requirements:
Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements. Must be able to obtain required certification for canine handler within the required timeframe.
