Position Title: Rock Climbing Guide

Our Sierra Experience department provides innovative outdoor programming including environmental education, field science, social emotional learning and resilience building adventures. Position Summary:
We are seeking a passionate and skilled individual to join our team as a Sierra Experience Rock Climbing Guide.
Climbing Guides are responsible for facilitating meaningful climbing experiences in the mountains, while minimizing risks and managing hazards for participants and staff. Overnight Summer Camp guides provide indirect night supervision and may be asked to sleep at the program lodging location.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Team Collaboration:
- Emphasize hospitality, the 4Roots method, environmental education, social-emotional learning, and responsibility to risk management expectations throughout programming and team communication.
- Join meetings as scheduled to review program information before attending.
- Join debrief meetings and aid in creating a positive portal for feedback.
Field Communication:
- Utilize SLACK app for real-time updates and check-ins with all field staff and admin support.
- Make real-time decisions about changes in honor of risk mitigation, commitment to equitable access/success of participants and/or overall participant experience.
- Communicate with SE Leadership staff immediately if/when itinerary changes and/or issues arise.
Participant Communication:
- Host a fun and engaging space for all participants.
- Ensure commitment to creating a space of equitable comfort, access and success for all participants.
- Compassionately communicate Behavior Agreements with participants who are struggling.
- Communicate with teachers/chaperones/guardians who are supporting & working with your group.
- Utilize DEI practices when communicating with youth regarding swimming skills and needs.
- Demonstrate personal self-awareness concerning professional language, sharing personal bias/opinion/beliefs and awareness of diversity/equity/inclusion.
Gear Preparation:
- Gateway will provide necessary gear such as ropes, belay devices, carabiners and other rescue equipment for hosting rock climbing.
- Prepare GMC provided youth gear including providing equitable access to all sizes of harness, shoes and helmets and creating comfortable spaces for participants at climbing sites.
- Sanitize & reorganize gear after each program. Notify management of any broken/missing gear.
- Climbing guides are expected to use personal climbing equipment such as rock/approach shoes, harness, and helmet. Gear stipends are available for these items to staff in varying amounts according to yearly hours worked.
Guiding Rock Climbing:
- Demonstrate exceptional attention to risk mitigation regarding rock climbing facilitation.
- Host informational announcements before youth engage in climbing including boundaries, group commitments/rules, demonstrations and fielding questions.
- Communicate professionally with any contractors or public who interact with your groups.
- Work hard to apply Leave No Trace principles within your groups, teams and locations.
- Be mindful of keeping groups collected, polite and aware of their use & footprint in spaces.
- Maintain required certifications and training renewals.

Requirements:

- Current CPR & Wilderness First Responder (or higher medical certification).
- Current AMGA SPI certification (or higher AMGA climbing certification).
- Ability to pass a Department of Justice background check.
- Experience managing teams or groups.
- Experience managing risk.
- A personal drive to improve skills/ knowledge concerning working with youth.
Preferred:
- Experience guiding outdoor activities with youth, especially in technical alpine terrain.
- Bi-lingual Spanish speaker.
Benefits and Wages:
- $20-$28.00 per hour depending on college degree, credentials, certifications, and/or experience.
