    TITLE: Seasonal Summer Part-Time Nature Educator
    LOCATION: Rocky Woods, Medfield
    PROPOSED PAYRATE 2024: $18/hour
    Minimum Age: 18 years

    The Role:
    If you love children, being outdoors, and all things nature, this job is for you!!  We are looking for high-energy, compassionate, creative self-starters to lead groups of campers on exploratory nature hikes and adventures at Rocky Woods Camp this summer. This part-time position runs June 28– August 9, 9AM-1PM each day.

    Who We Are:
    Rocky Woods Camp is a summer day camp located at Rocky Woods in Medfield, MA, run by the YMCA of Greater Boston in partnership with The Trustees. Rocky Woods is a 491-acre reservation with scenic trails, wildlife, ponds, geographical features, and a deep history combining to make the property a special place to visit and work. 
    At the summer camp, 5–13 year olds will learn about forests, ponds, flora, fauna, and how we as humans fit into the woodland habitat. This nature-based camp connects children to the natural systems that support us all, while spending time outdoors, exploring, making friends, and having fun.

    Who You Are:
    You are energetic, fun, approachable, inclusive, creative, and have leadership qualities.  You’re ready to teach children how forests, ponds, streams, and people are all interconnected via hands-on exploratory activities in the fields, forests, and ponds of Rocky Woods.

    Essential Functions:
    ·    Lead a group of 20 campers and YMCA counselors on two-hour nature hikes and exploratory activities each day
    ·    Design and implement camp curriculum and activities based on weekly themes including animal habitats, geology, plant science, and wilderness survival
    ·    Plan daily age-appropriate activities that get campers excited about the environment
    ·    Communicate with YMCA staff regarding camp questions and basic camper information
    ·    Organize, prepare, and reset for each day’s activities
    ·    Ensure safety of campers and staff by closely following established protocols
    ·    Meet regularly to evaluate experience and performance
    ·    Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation

    A Day in the Life:
    Each day begins with planning for the morning’s hike and activities, including consideration of weather, trail conditions, and safety in Rocky Wood’s wilderness environment. Nature educators partner with YMCA staff to discuss questions, concerns, and supports as needed. Each morning’s 2-hour hike and nature lessons for two groups of 20 children ages 5–13.
    The Rocky Woods Nature Educator works 4 hours per day, 9AM–1PM during the 5-week camp, July 8– August 9, and the training and planning period, June 28–3.

    Qualifications


    What We Need From You: 
    Qualifications:
    ·    Reliable transportation to Rocky Woods in Medfield each day
    ·    Full availability 5 days per week 9AM–1PM, June 28 -August 9 (except July 4 and 5)
    ·    Experience working as a camp counselor, classroom teacher, or informal educator with ages 5–13
    ·    Knowledge of or interest in nature and/or education
    ·    A great attitude about working outdoors in all weather conditions
    ·    A terrific sense of humor!

    Additional Requirements:
    ·    Satisfactory background check (CORI, SORI)
    ·    Ability to lift 40 pounds
    ·    CPR and Basic First Aid certifications (will be provided, if needed)
