  • Rocky Woods Nature Explorers is a children’s summer day camp located at Rocky Woods in Medfield, MA. Rocky Woods is a year-round destination for outdoor lovers and a prized habitat for songbirds, bullfrogs, beavers, and painted turtles. At camp, we have an interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to learning in the fields and forests, by the ponds, and on the nature trails. Our unique camp connects children to the land and the natural systems that support us all, while spending time outdoors, exploring, making friends, and having fun.

    The Camp Educator position at Rocky Woods is a seasonal role. The typical schedule for the full-time Camp Educator is a 36-hour work week, Monday through Friday for the season. The camp season runs from June 26–August 18 8:30 AM-3:30 PM and a mandatory staff training the week of June 5 –June 9. The Camp Educator is primarily responsible for the planning and daily execution of camp programs and activities and direct supervision of campers 5-9 years old, depending on the assigned age group.

    Essential Functions:
    • Daily supervision and safe keeping of campers.
    • Design and implement camp curriculum and activities-based nature, local flora and fauna, and the natural world with support from staff and property resources.
    • Plan daily age-appropriate activities and nature projects with other educators.
    • Lead daily plant, animal, and nature-based activities with designated age group between ages 5 and 9.
    • Communicate with camper parents regarding camp questions and basic camper information.
    • Perform daily camp staff chores to organize and prepare for each day.
    • Ensure safety of campers and staff by closely following all COVID-19 protocols.
    • Meet periodically with Camp Director to evaluate experience and performance.
    • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.
    Qualifications

    • Experience working as a camp counselor, classroom teacher, or informal educator with children ages 5-9.
    • Must be outgoing, have a willingness to learn, and bring joy and enthusiasm to work every day.
    • Have experience with and enjoy working with children in an outdoor setting.
    • Have knowledge of or interest in nature-based education, outdoor survival, and sustainability. Utilize a creative approach to developing high-quality nature-based educational experiences and activities.
    • Have knowledge of or interest in hiking, orienteering, backpacking, the great outdoors.
    • Have a desire to share enthusiasm for the natural world with children.
    • Have a familiarity with Rocky Woods and The Trustees of Reservations.
     
    Other Requirements
    • Reliable transportation.
    • Must be fully available for nine weeks including camp staff training week and all 8 weeks of camp (June 5-9 and June 26-August 18)
    • A satisfactory criminal background check (CORI and SORB).
    • Community CPR and Basic First Aid certifications required by June 1, 2023.
    • Able and willing to work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
