    DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

    The Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) is a multi-funded organization of the Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS) at UC Santa Cruz. CHES provides leadership in the areas of college student life and residential services, housing services and facilities, capital planning, business and financial analysis, dining services, conference services, and early education services. Through these units educational and developmental programs and services are offered to all members of the campus community including students, faculty, staff, children and external constituents. CHES provides on-campus housing and dining services to approximately 9,500 undergraduate and graduate students in ten residential colleges and six multi-college affiliated residential communities which support single students and students with families.

    Services provided by the Residential Community Service Program (RCSP) support over two million GSF of residential facilities housing over 9,500 residential students in CHES managed housing on and off campus. Ten residential colleges, The Village, Family Student Housing, Graduate Housing, Camper Park, and University Town Center. Summer season programs include summer school and summer conferences which bring numerous conference groups and over 13,000 conferees to the campus.

    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, Residential Community Service Program, the Residential Community Service Supervisor is responsible for directly supervising two to three Residential Community Service Partners in their zone. Provides nightly safety and security for residents, employees, families, and campus visitors as well as the facilities of designated residential communities during their work shift. The Residential Community Service Supervisor provides team leadership to the Residential Community Service Partners who provide services to communities ranging from 600 to 2000 residents and approximately 1000 or more summer guests. Supervisors work closely with campus emergency response personnel (University Campus Police Department and Santa Cruz Fire Department) as well as Residential Life staff to provide a safe and secure environment in each residential community.

    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary: $65,000 - $68,000 / annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
    Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    30% - Staff Supervision

    • Provide supervisory support including, but not limited to: training, scheduling, performance management, conducting performance evaluations; providing decision-making and leadership for all non-routine occurrences in the field; responding to incidents in the field; proofreading logs and reviewing reports; ongoing coaching of staff; acting as a liaison for the department with Residential Life staff and campus leadership; participate on departmental hiring committees.

    20% - Community Walks\

    • Conduct community walks through their assigned residential communities to ensure that security and safety are maintained.
    • Conduct lock-up walks to secure designated buildings, facilities, and bollards.
    • Assist residents with lockouts, note and mitigate any policy violations, unsafe conditions, or maintenance issues within the community.
    • Intercept unauthorized persons found in the community and respond accordingly with the appropriate campus support units.
    • As a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act, immediately report all crime or discussion of crime concerning university affiliates, property, staff, or guests to the campus police.
    • Respond to radio calls from Dispatch.


    15% - Operations

    • Maintain current postings of pertinent information (police alerts, community notices, etc.).
    • Maintain all email correspondences and reporting with constituents each shift.
    • Ensure that the zone logs and incident reports are proofread and complete before submission.
    • Maintain zone computers and manage local user accounts for line staff.
    • Maintain staff folders with training completion logs, counseling memos, vacation approvals, etc.
    • Maintain scheduling records for RCSP staff. Calendar the substitute pool usage to ensure proper payroll and budget tracking.
    • Attend meetings - RCSP Management meetings and check-in meetings with local Residential Life leadership.
    • Maintain current equipment inventories and inspect each item for needed repair or replacement.


    10% - Training Presentations

    • Create and plan training for staff based upon current needs or changes to policy or procedure.
    • Create handouts and visual aids for the training and present the training to staff.
    • Document the completion of training for all participants and maintain all assigned employee training files.


    10% - Policy Development

    • Provide ongoing feedback to the Associate Director to reflect needed changes or development of procedures and policies that accurately reflect the current expectations and job responsibilities of Residential Community Service Partners.
    • Document current procedures and policies following appropriate notification periods and reviews for best practice performance management with staff.


    5% - Emergency Preparedness

    • Be familiar with and prepared to implement the UCSC/OES hazard/emergency-procedures.
    • Ensure staff are current with CPR/First Aid certification, Community Emergency Response Teams training, fire suppression training, blood borne pathogen training, and emergency plan training.
    • Ensure staff are familiar with and able to provide leadership with local emergency response efforts according to the current Emergency Response Plan for that community.
    • Ensure that all building fire extinguishers in the area of responsibility are inspected monthly.
    • Be familiar with and able to instruct others in all training.


    5% - Leadership/Disaster Management

    • Provide leadership during a crisis response where needed in furtherance of maintaining a safe and secure residential environment.
    • Provide leadership during a disaster response until local management arrives and relieves you of command duties.


    5% - Other Duties as Assigned

    • Will drive campus owned vehicles and/or a personal vehicle as needed.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • High school diploma or equivalent experience
    • Previous experience or strong knowledge in security, safety, emergency, and/or disaster response practices and principles.
    • Supervisory experience and ability sufficient to communicate expectations, set goals and objectives, motivate staff, give and receive feedback, and effectively address disciplinary issues.
    • Experience working with and supporting communities from diverse backgrounds (e.g., ethnic and cultural, socioeconomic, religious, sexual orientation, and gender).]
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide instructions, information, and ideas clearly in written and verbal communication.
    • Customer service experience sufficient to interact in a positive and professional manner with all levels of personnel within the organization.
    • Demonstrated basic computer skills: email, prepare documents, update databases and spreadsheets for tracking and calendaring.
    • Ability to exercise judgement and discretion in dealing with sensitive and/or confidential personnel matters.
    • Ability to engage in effective communication with diverse individuals and teams with an emphasis on de-escalation skills and clear communications.
    • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy at all times while interacting with others.
    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
    • Ability to set; and meet goals and deadlines.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience in Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training and methodology.
    • CPR/First Aid Certification.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
    • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
    • Ability to work night shifts from 7:00pm-3:00am, including weekends and holidays.
    • Ability to walk multiple nightly rounds and repeatedly climb stairs and inclines during rounds.
    • Ability to transport 40-pound bollards several times each night, every shift.
    • Will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years.
