Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Safety Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Job Function

    • Ensure that the organization complies with all relevant HSE regulations, policies, and standards by monitoring and reporting on HSE performance.
    • Develop and implement HSE programs and strategies, including occupational health programs, emergency response plans, site security protocols, and environmental management programs that align with the refinery's overall goals and objectives.
    • Manage HSE reporting requirements, including preparing and submitting HSE reports to regulatory authorities, stakeholders, and the public.
    • Provide advice and guidance to senior management, staff, and stakeholders on HSE matters, including regulatory requirements, best practices, and emerging trends.
    • Represent the company through advocacy work with policymakers, elected delegates, and regulatory agencies. Provide written and/or oral remarks during public comment sessions. Engage with local communities, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders, in collaboration with Public Relations Manager, to maintain positive relationships and address HSE-related concerns.
    • Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards and risks that could affect the health, safety, and security of employees, contractors, and visitors, to develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures to effectively handle potential accidents, spills, fires, or other emergencies.
    • Ensure that all employees, contractors, and visitors are trained on HSE policies and procedures and that they understand how to identify and report hazards.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    • Strong knowledge of relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations and standards.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful HSE strategies and programs.
    • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external stakeholders.
    • Lead and manage the HSE team to develop and implement HSE policies and procedures, conduct risk assessments, provide training and education, investigate incidents, and ensure compliance with HSE regulations.
    • Lead efforts to identify areas for improvement in HSE processes, systems, and practices, and drive initiatives to enhance overall safety and environmental performance.

    Knowledge Skills

    • Knowledge of HSE regulations and policies.
    • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong project management skills.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office and HSE management software.

    Education/ Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field. A Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
    • At least 10 years of experience in HSE management, compliance, or a related field.
