Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Safety Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. QUALIFICATIONS:
Competitive Civil Service position. Candidates must meet the minimum Civil Service qualifications and successfully complete the exam. Proven experience as:
A) graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS Registered College with an Associate’s degree in Health Science, Earth Science, Emergency Management, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field, OR
B) Two (2) years of paid full time or its part-time equivalent experience in occupational safety & health programming, emergency management, engineering, industrial hygiene or related experience, OR
C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Implementing changes and programs to document with health and safety laws and regulations and emergency planning procedures; conducting workshops, drills and other similar activities; performs building inspections; provides and/or coordinates training and information programs in conjunction with emergency response agencies for school personnel, parents and community groups; documents compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to health, safety and emergency planning
SALARY/BENEFITS:
$14.37 - $17.24 and benefits and leave benefits based on working conditions
