Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Safety Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     The director of safety, under minimal supervision, performs senior-level work with extensive decision-making discretion leading, planning, coordinating, and implementing plans for the day-to-day operations of the district's physical safety and security. The position also helps to develop and monitor school safety plans and ensures the school system's compliance with all applicable state and federal laws.

    Place of Work

    The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.


    Essential Functions

    • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
    • Lead, manage, supervise, and evaluate assigned programs/staff in the district
    • Coordinate a comprehensive school safety/security program; ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local laws, regulatory agencies, and Board policies
    • Prepare and coordinate the development and maintenance of District level Crisis Response Plan
    • Assist/advise in the development of crisis management/emergency response plans as part of each school's safety plan
    • Work with principals to develop and implement school training plans consisting of exercises and drills for active assailant, evacuation, and lockdowns
    • Direct/coordinate the periodic assessment/audit of school facilities and grounds to identify safety and security issues
    • Coordinate with site-based administrators and building services/maintenance staff to address and correct safety/security issues on school campuses
    • Lead the District Safety Committee
    • Manage the weapon detection scanner program, including the facilitation of staff training and partnership with the support team
    • Manage the anonymous reporting system, including the oversight of the tip management process and response
    • Serve as a liaison with partner agencies such as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management, the Center for Prevention of School Violence, and others who provide resources and information related to school safety
    • Respond to and assist in emergency situations, as appropriate
    • Responsible for the hiring and oversight of crossing guards and off-duty traffic police officers
    • Prepare and present reports to senior leadership as requested
    • Monitor and participate in the development and administration of the department budget
    • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations
    • Perform related work as assigned or required

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

    • Knowledge of principles, practices, and trends pertaining to safety, security, and emergency management
    • Knowledge of legal mandates, policies, regulations and guidelines regarding school safety, security, and emergency management
    • Knowledge of educational organization goals, objectives, and operating practices & procedures
    • Ability to organize, coordinate, and direct a safety and security program effectively and efficiently
    • Ability to interpret and apply legal mandates, policies, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to school safety and security
    • Ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress
    • Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations, while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor
    • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
    • Ability to develop and monitor a budget
    • Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships
    • Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums
    • Ability to problem-solve utilizing sound judgment
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business
    • Ability to develop related charts, graphs, reports, and records
    • Ability to communicate effectively
    • Ability to plan, organize, and influence the action of others toward the improvement of health and safety practices
    • Ability to direct and evaluate the work of others

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, risk management, homeland security, public safety, or closely related field required
    • At least seven (7) years of related Safety experience required
    • Or, any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
    • Certified Safety Professional preferred
    • Associate Risk Management (ARM) preferred

    Special Requirements

    • Possess and maintain a NC Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation
    • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
