Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Safety Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Fallingwater, a property entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and designated as a National Historic Landmark and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is seeking to fill a full-time Director of Safety and Security. This position is for a future vacancy need that has an anticipated start date of August 12, 2024.

    The function of this position is to plan, direct and coordinate activities related to the protection, safeguarding and security of visitors and staff at all Conservancy-owned properties and buildings. This position is responsible for providing leadership, oversight and direction to all security staff, including contracted staff, and directing daily safety and security operations at Fallingwater, its grounds and ancillary areas. Overall, this position is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for visitors and staff at all Conservancy locations.

    Job Duties

    • Supervises, schedules and trains in-house Fallingwater security personnel and staff on security policies and procedures, including emergency preparedness and response.
    • Trains, schedules and oversees any contracted security staff, including armed security officers.
    • Oversees preparation of incident and accident reports by all Conservancy staff and contracted staff. Maintains log on security and safety related incidents and provides management information reports.
    • Monitors and maintains the security of buildings, collections, grounds and physical assets for Fallingwater and other Conservancy-owned properties and buildings.
    • Position will be based at Fallingwater, with travel to other WPC locations as needed.
    • Responsible for design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of security policies and procedures, including the Active Threat Plan for Fallingwater. Develops and implements Active Threat Plans for other Conservancy properties as needed.
    • Drafts, implements, and updates Security Procedure Manuals.
    • Performs site inspections and security assessments.
    • Monitors, reports and investigates any suspected breach in security or policy. This would include, but not be limited to, suspected or known issues such as: damage or theft to WPC property or employee property, staff misuse of Conservancy-owned property, falsification of records, staff misconduct, violation of policy and/or theft of money or goods.
    • Monitors cash control procedures, retail loss, inventory audit reports and other reports to identify trends, assess cause and develop plans to reduce losses or address breaches in security procedures.
    • Functions as main liaison with any contracted security companies. Sets standards and performance expectations and communicates and resolves problems with security company management. Participates in any contract renewals or renegotiations with the security companies.
    • Works with security system monitoring company in security and alarm installation, upgrades and changes. Troubleshoots and reports any alarm or monitoring issues.
    • Carries out management responsibilities in accordance with the Conservancy’s policies, programs, and procedures. Responsibilities include development and administration of budgetary information; recommending and/or approving staff changes or actions; ensuring appropriate training and staff development; providing advice and guidance on the more complex aspects of the job; and resolving complaints or related departmental issues.
    • Intercedes and handles disruptive visitors or staff at Fallingwater or other WPC locations as needed. Trains in-house security personnel and staff on appropriate interaction and handling.
    • Functions as member of the Conservancy’s Workplace Safety Committee.
    • Develops and maintains security department budget. Reviews and approves security expenses and invoices. Monitors expenses in conjunction with budgetary guidelines. Purchases security-related supplies and equipment and ensures that appropriate levels of supplies and equipment are maintained and available to staff.
    • Reviews CPR and First Aid certification for staff and coordinates annual training. Maintains first aid kits and ensures that contents are up to date. Responsible for maintaining defibrillators.
    • Confers with executive officers and other administrative and management personnel to review achievements and discuss required changes in goals and objectives resulting from current status and conditions.
    • Promotes an effective system of communication throughout the organization.
    • Supports the Conservancy’s cost containment and fundraising efforts and needs, as applicable.
    • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as needed.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree, with major coursework in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Security or a closely related field
    • More than five year’s management-level experience with security, safety and loss prevention
    • Museum security experience preferred
    • Five or more years of supervisory experience, including experience with selecting and training staff, assigning, evaluating and modifying work, and appraising staff performance
    • The following certifications and licenses are required:
      • Current certification in first aid and CPR
      • Act 33 and 34 clearances
      • Valid motor vehicle license
      • Certified Protection Professional (CPP) certification is preferred
    • Must be able to demonstrate a broad knowledge of security encompassing legal principles, asset protection, safety rules and regulations, electronic security and alarm systems, physical security risk assessment, emergency preparedness, and investigatory practices
    • Must have good communication, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
    • Must be able to interact professionally with visitors and staff and remain calm under pressure
    • Must have sound management judgment, good decision-making skills and be able to professionally communicate issues to management
    • Must be able to handle sensitive information discreetly and confidentially.
    • Ability to work a non-traditional schedule including weekends and holidays as required
    • Must flexible with schedule and work hours. Must be able to respond, either directly or through staff, to emergency security situations on a 24/7 basis.
    • Computer skills are required
    • Must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation

    Additional Details

    Although the position is based at Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pa. in Fayette County, there may be travel to other Conservancy-owned locations as needed.

    Pay

    The starting rate is $69,000-$82,000. Please include salary requirements. In consideration of advanced qualifications and ample experience, the pay may be higher than this range, as pay may commensurate with experience.
