Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Director of Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for compliance with applicable environmental health and safety regulations campus wide. The Director must collaborate with and be a trusted advisor for a number of departments across the campus.
Responsibilities:
- Manage the development, implementation and administration of policies, procedures and programs for Vassar College in order to maintain all required federal, state and local environmental permits
- Ensure Vassar complies with all applicable federal, state and local environmental and occupational health and safety programs as well as required life safety regulatory requirements
- Oversee all programs related to environmental health and occupational safety, including but not limited to: fire safety, laboratory safety, OSHA compliance, hazardous waste management, accident and injury investigation and reduction, safety training and industrial hygiene
- Provide technical consultation and recommendations to all departments in matters related to occupational health and safety, including but not limited to: risk assessments, personal protective equipment selection and usage, and engineering controls
- Monitor changes to and new developments in environmental, occupational health and safety laws
- Coordinate accident/incident investigations and reports findings to supervisors and related committees as needed; compiles and organizes safety and Worker's Compensation data for reports and briefings
- Assess environmental workplace conditions related to chemical exposure and physical agents such as heat, noise, etc.
- Oversee and/or provides employee training for environmental compliance, worker safety, and laboratory safety programs
- Maintain documentation of plans and policies related to environmental health and safety regulatory programs, including but not limited to: Environmental and OSHA compliance, Life safety requirements, Controlled Substance management, Regulated Medical waste handling, Petroleum Bulk Storage handling
- Maintain records for all hazardous material testing on campus including but not limited to asbestos, lead, PCB's and other regulated materials
- Manage OSHA programs including, but not limited to respiratory protection, confined space programs, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, fall protection, electrical safety program
- Acquire permits and prepares and submits regulatory reports, including but not limited to: hazardous waste, air permits, petroleum bulk storage, pesticide agency, regulated medical waste, radioactive waste, etc.
- Serve as a member of Institutional Biosafety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee, Safety committees, Crisis Response Planning Group-co chair with Campus Safety staff
- Supervise the hazardous chemical, universal, and biological waste collection and disposal program on each campus and manages onsite hazardous waste contractors
- Serve as point and first contact for all environmental and Health and Safety regulatory agencies on behalf of the campus. Responsible for maintaining positive working relationships with such agencies.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in an area related to environmental science / health, environmental engineering, safety, chemistry, biology or other related field
- Certified Hazardous Material Manager
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Minimum 5 years experience working in a similar role or setting
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable federal, state and local environmental, occupational health and safety and life safety regulatory programs, including, but not limited to: fire and building codes, laboratory chemical management, air and water emissions; petroleum and chemical storage tank management, hazardous waste management and hazardous communications
- Excellent skills in customer relations and communications
- Ability to be on call for emergencies, as needed
- Ability to work inside, outside, in hot or cold temperatures, in noisy and uncomfortable environments
- Strong meeting facilitation, organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to foster trust and build relationships within the College and to the public; strong attention to detail; able to work independently or with groups
Preferred Qualifications:
- NY Code Enforcement Officer
- OSHA 10/30 hr certified or within 3 months of hire
