Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Safety Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Overview:

    The Safety Director position will implement and maintain safety programs and develop the Utilitra safety culture. The person in this role will uphold the culture of Utilitra, including relationship-building with customers as well as general behavior on Utilitra or Customer premises and at Utilitra-sponsored events. This is primarily an office position, although being present in the field shall be required to enhance the safety culture within Utilitra.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Department Leadership Responsibilities:
      • Provide strategic direction and leadership to a team of Safety professionals.
      • Establish and manage the goals and objectives for accomplishing safety program work and ensure proper utilization of personnel; delegate functional activities to subordinates and establish supervisory schedules and responsibilities.
      • Support professional growth for safety department staff.
      • Ensure that all safety-related equipment is approved, inventoried, assigned, and tracked.
    • Work with Company leadership to understand and establish safety initiatives, goals, and outcomes and confidently develop and administer a long-term plan to reduce the risk for Company.
    • Track and communicate safety related metrics, and ensure adequate systems and processes exist accordingly.
    • Participate in Customer safety meetings and convey information from Customers about their safety requirements on specific job sites or within their facilities.
    • Maintain Customer qualification systems with current and accurate Company information.
    • Provide RFI/RFQ/RFP and contract document support as it relates to safety and emergency plans.
    • Update, adapt, and continuously improve Company Safety Manual(s), including all associated safety policies, procedures, and programs.
    • Respond to Company personnel on safety-related concerns, questions, and issues.
    • Develop and maintain programs to encourage safety suggestions by employees and follow through with corrective actions when practical.
    • Conduct job-site visits, safety inspections, safety meetings, etc.
    • Plan, organize, and deliver routine and specialty training on safety and emergency preparedness, business continuity, and disaster recovery.
    • Ensure that reported safety issues and concerns related to job-site equipment, tools, and personnel are answered by Safety or the respective Department/Operations/Project Manager.
    • Coordinate with Human Resources to administer the company drug and alcohol testing program.
    • Coordinate with Human Resources and Department managers to ensure that all new employee safety orientations and drug screenings are conducted.
    • Manage and promote company safety standards in accordance with OSHA regulations and other regulatory agencies.
    • Manage all injuries, vehicle accidents, property damage, or other safety related incidents and make recommendations to senior management for preventive or corrective actions to mediate the hazards related to the incidents.
    • Work closely with Claims Manager to collect proper documentation for injuries, property claims, motor vehicle accidents, and OSHA 300 logs.
    • Guide or perform post-accident investigations and translate findings into preventative training to reduce or eliminate the risk of repeated accidents.
    • Contact and/or subcontract a professional safety consulting firm for specific safety concerns, requirements, or regulations when required.
    • Cross-train in all facets of the Safety department, preparing to fill in for anyone absent and grow in responsibility and scope over time.
    • Perform other duties so assigned.

    Requirements/Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Safety and Health, EH&S Management, or a related field preferred or equivalent work experience. Master's degree a plus. CUSA or CUSP is preferred.
    • 5 years safety experience in the construction industry preferred.
    • 5 years of leadership/managerial experience within Safety and Health.
    • Strong knowledge and understanding of OSHA and applicable federal, state, local, and company safety regulations
      • OSHA certifications beneficial (OSHA 500, OSHA 510, OSHA 30).
    • Expertise in regulatory communications.
    • Strong skills in organization, communication, and attention to detail.
    • Experience giving presentations and formal training.
    • Excellent customer service skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to drive a motorized vehicle.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Required to have visual and sensory acuity to observe facilities or structures and operate equipment and vehicles.
    • Stand and drive for prolonged periods of time.
    • Stooping, climbing, squatting and walking.
    • Wear a respirator and personal protective equipment appropriate to the assigned work.
    • Work outdoors with exposure to extreme weather elements both hot and cold.

    Travel Requirements:

    • Ability to travel overnight for approximately 2 nights per month.
