Safety Director directs, develops, and oversees the general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization. Ensures the workplace is in compliance with OSHA and other state, local, or industry specific regulations and that periodic safety audits are conducted. Being a Safety Director provides programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment. Develops a systemic process to collect data and analyze the causes of accidents and generate required reporting. Additionally, Safety Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to long-term health hazards. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to top management. The Safety Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Job Summary: This position develops, implements, manages, and evaluates District-wide safety, security, emergency preparedness and response.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Deputy Superintendent; supervises security staff
Working Conditions: Works in an office environment and at multiple buildings; requires occasional exposure to visual display terminal; requires dexterity and precision to operate computer; experiences interruptions from telephone and office visitors. Work requires the ability to deal with angry or distraught individuals. Work requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle to travel between work sites. Work also requires inspection of facilities, which can include climbing ladders, working in confined spaces and high places, bending, stooping, walking, and standing for prolonged periods, and working in inclement weather. The individual in this position will need to respond at all hours to emergent situations.
Minimum Qualifications: Prior managerial experience overseeing safety and security in a large, multiple-facility organization, preferably in an educational setting. Prior law enforcement, criminal justice, safety, or security experience in a large, complex organization. B.A or B.S. in a related field strongly preferred.
Knowledge of current best practices related to security management and threat assessment involving complex, multi-site organizations. Knowledge of laws and regulations governing student and employee health and safety, including OSHA, WISHA, HAZMAT, and Disaster Preparedness. Knowledge of accident and injury prevention, reduction, and mitigation techniques and procedures. Knowledge of the principals and practices of management and supervision. Ability to plan and organize, including the development of system-wide security plans. Ability to develop procedures related to area of responsibility. Ability to compile, analyze, utilize, and present data and statistics on safety and security issues. Ability to listen effectively to a variety of stakeholders and develop durable and effective solutions to issues and problems. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work effectively with others to build consensus, resolve conflicts and problems, and function as a team member. Ability to use good judgment and remain calm in emotionally charged situations. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and database software programs effectively and learn new application software as needed.
Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record; ability to travel between facilities.
Salary: Non-represented Administrator (NNRAP-AD), Level D; placement on the salary schedule will be determined by Human Resources DOE; additional stipend for MA or PhD/EdD degree. FLSA Exempt.
Work Year: 12 month position, 260 days per year, 8.0 hours per day.
Benefits: Washington state health insurance coverage (SEBB) and a Washington state retirement package, for eligible positions. Generally, you are eligible for SEBB benefits if you are anticipated to work at least 630 hours per school year (September 1 through August 31).
