To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law, or be appointed in accordance with provisions provided by Civil Service Law, Section 55b/c.

If an eligible list for this position does not currently exist and there are three or fewer qualified candidates interested in the appointment to this position, a permanent appointment may be made pursuant to Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law. To be eligible, candidates must be an employee of the Department of Transportation and have one year of permanent competitive service as an Agency Safety and Health Representative 1.

If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
The minimum requirements for taking the examination are:
Promotional Exam:
Three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Agency Safety and Health Representative 1.
After one year of the service described in the Minimum Qualifications, successful candidates will be qualified for appointment from the eligible list.
Agency Safety and Health Representative 2 candidates who are appointed to positions in the NYS Department of Transportation will be required to successfully complete six code courses as required by the NYS Department of State. Probationers who do not complete this coursework will be terminated for failure to successfully complete probation.
At time of interview, you may be required to have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate your ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.
Open Competitive Exam:
Either 1. seven years of experience in the field of occupational safety and health, industrial safety, industrial hygiene, construction safety, fire safety and prevention, * or building design relating to fire codes.
Or 2. 30 semester college credits in occupational safety and health, industrial safety, industrial hygiene, construction safety, fire safety and prevention, or building design relating to fire codes AND six years of experience as described above. You must include with your application a list of qualifying courses, showing the names of each course, number of credits, the date(s) of course completion and the college or university where the education was received.
Or 3. a bachelor’s or higher degree in industrial safety, industrial hygiene, or occupational safety and health AND three years of the experience described above.
- Experience limited to firefighting (paid or volunteer) is NOT qualifying.
