Safety Specialist implements, manages and monitors safety programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable requirements. Evaluates the organization's procedures, facilities and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safeguards and solutions. Being a Safety Specialist ensures the organization complies with all current safety regulations and that all employees are aware of safety requirements and are prepared to follow safety procedures. Collects data and reports on all safety and accident events. Additionally, Safety Specialist may have additional responsibility for fire prevention, hazardous waste management, resource conservation, or other safety related activities depending on the industry and location. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Safety Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     McWane Ductile New Jersey is currently seeking a fulltime bi-lingual (English & Spanish) Safety Specialist/Trainer for its Phillipsburg New Jersey location.    

    The overall purpose of this role is to be accountable in building an interactive safety environment and supervise manufacturing activities per safety specifications and OSHA requirements. The specialist will ensure all safety incidents are investigated, well-documented, and assist Safety Manager in applying appropriate actions to eliminate any further incident occurrences.

    Responsibilities

    Essential duties and responsibilities include(but are not limited to):

    • Assure compliance with OSHA and state safety regulations, as well as corporate and divisional safety policies for facilities, performance, and procedural issues.
    • Plan and implement safety policies and procedures aligned with local, state, and federal OSHA rules and regulations.
    • Build, coordinate, and maintain worksite safety practice training programs such as(but not limited to) emergency procedures, fire prevention, accurate handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, etc, for all team members.
    • Inspect facilities to detect existing or potential health and safety hazards; resolve corrective/ preventative measures as needed, and follow up to ensure full implementation of measures.
    • Provide information(signs, posters, barriers, and other materials) warning of potential and actual safety hazards, and to mitigate hazardous conditions when they cannot be eliminated.
    • Maintain safety files and records.
    • Periodically review policies/ procedures and recommend modifications per changes in legal and/or other requirements.
    • Build and maintain Health & Safety training process.
    •  Establish personnel and facility safety through development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and procedures.
    • Supervise and lead company safety standards according to OSHA and state regulations.
    • Investigate industrial accidents to minimize recurrence and prepare accident reports.
    • Examine new machinery and equipment plans and specifications and validate incorporation of required safety precautions.
    • Evaluate team member activity working with new machinery and equipment to identify any hazards.
    • Tour location to inspect fire and safety equipment, machinery, and facilities; identify and correct potential hazards; and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
    • Conduct or coordinate safety training to educate team members about safety policies, laws, and practices.
    • Any other tasks as assigned by Supervisor

    Qualifications

    Qualifications/Position Requirements:

    Knowledge/Skill/Experience:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or 2-5 years related experience and/or training; 
      • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
    • Excellent written and verbal skills and ability to interact with all levels of management
    • Experience in formatting/developing/implementing/maintaining/updating
    • Strong experience and knowledge of all OSHA regulations and standards
    • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish

    • Ability to comprehend verbal and written instructions and procedures.
    • Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner
    • Able to persevere  in stressful situations and a multi-tasking environment.
    • Critical accuracy and attention to detail. 
    • Can develope alternative solutions and work well in team problem-solving  
    • Able to prioritize work and meet project timelines

     

    Personal Interaction (Internal/External):

    • Constant with employees at all levels and departments
    • Constant contact with Safety Department Staff

      Supervision (Received):

    • Work  independently with minimum supervision.

     

    Personal Protective Equipment:

    • Observe all organization PPE requirements.

    • Clean, well-lit climate with periods of temperature extremes while walking in various production areas.
    • Loud to moderate noise environment. Works with various machines and equipment.
    • Will work in an office area and various areas throughout the plant
