Safety Specialist implements, manages and monitors safety programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable requirements. Evaluates the organization's procedures, facilities and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safeguards and solutions. Being a Safety Specialist ensures the organization complies with all current safety regulations and that all employees are aware of safety requirements and are prepared to follow safety procedures. Collects data and reports on all safety and accident events. Additionally, Safety Specialist may have additional responsibility for fire prevention, hazardous waste management, resource conservation, or other safety related activities depending on the industry and location. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Safety Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     Summary

    The Remote Safety Specialist is responsible for development and implementation of customized training processes and systems for NMS to assure employee health, safety and fitness for duty. This position will primarily be focused on Remote Site Safety support but will also support other aspects of NMS business.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Build and maintain a high level of visibility in day-to-day operations to promote/enhance safety rapport with NMS employees.
    • Provide field support to remote camps and facilities.
    • Provide support for the North Slope Safety Manager as needed.
    • Provide oversight and support of tasks with potential impact on the Environment.
    • Implements established safety policies and procedures.
    • Consults with managers and supervisors regarding the design and use of equipment, shops, fire-prevention and safety programs.
    • Assists managers and supervisors in developing and implementing local safety related systems and procedures.
    • Inspects or tours organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, unsafe behaviors, recommends corrective or preventative measures where indicated.
    • Conducts studies and job safety analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
    • Assist (lead where appropriate) with the planning and presentation of safety meetings.
    • Provides guidance on incident and near-miss investigation, recommends actions.
    • Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining safety related programs.
    • Provides health and safety regulatory support.
    • Develops, reviews and revises health and safety policies, procedures, and programs.
    • Devises, supervises, coordinates, and delivers various safety training classes.
    • Assists supervisors with task hazard assessments and PPE hazard assessments.
    • Teaches various safety classes on a wide variety of topics throughout the North Slope.
    • Supports various committees such as HSSE Steering Committees.
    • Supporting industrial hygiene and health activities via monitoring/testing, safety inspections and auditing, reporting and documentation.
    • Identifying, assessing, and recommending actions related to health, safety, and emergency response issues.
    • Knowing and observing safe work practices.
    • Maintains safety files and records.
    • Generate and promote ideas to improve HSSE performance.
    • Aid in planning and conducting required emergency drills.
    • Notify supervisor is safety and sanitation standards are not being met.
    • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
    • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
    • 30-hour OSHA Certification
    • ServSafe Manager Certification
    • At least two (2) years directly related industrial safety experience. (Maintenance, construction, housekeeping, or food services, etc.).
    • One or more of these certificates highly desirable: Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician, Construction Health and Safety Technician, Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Registered Sanitarian.
    • Must have ability to obtain certification within one year of hire.
    • A working knowledge of CFR 49, CFR 29, CFR 40, NFPA, International Fire Code, International Building Code, ASME, ANSI, AKOSH regulations, and basic Industrial hygiene techniques and principles.
    • Must have intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Word / Excel / PowerPoint / Outlook and other similar common software programs
    • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS’ vehicle insurance policy.
    • Must pass all pre-employment contract requirements which may include but are not limited to: drug test, physical and fit for duty assessment and hearing test. Applicants not located near a testing facility are responsible for paying for travel to the nearest testing facility.
    • Must be able to as part of a team with fellow employees, customers, and clients.
    • Must be able to make decisions in the moment with little to no supervision.
    • Must be able to be on your feet for 12 hours per shift for the scheduled rotation.
    • Must be able to live in dormitory style settings and meet cleanliness requirements of the remote camp.
    • Must be willing to learn and participate in pest control program.
    • Contract requires employees to speak, understand, read and write English.
    • Must meet and adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set forth by the company and client.

    CANDIDATES RESIDING OUTSIDE ANCHORAGE AREA:

    Candidates residing in Alaska & the Lower 48 for any contract : For the purposes of pre-employment testing, Anchorage will be considered the point of hire (with the exception of drug testing, which will be conducted near the candidate’s place of residence). Employee is responsible for any travel expenses and needed accommodations related to pre employment tasks that need to be completed in Anchorage, AK. This includes, but is not limited to, any safety training requirements, required pre employment testing and/or training such as physical, DOT physical/medical card, fit for duty, audiogram, and/or other testing required by contract/company (NSTC, APICC training, security licensing requirements, etc.).

    Candidates residing in Alaska for Alyeska Contract: pre-employment testing will be scheduled near the candidate’s area of residence within the state. The only exception is when the candidate lives in a region without the necessary service providers to complete all requirements.

    Flights to Remote Locations : All employees are responsible for all expenses related to reporting to point of hire (Anchorage, AK) for scheduled trips paid for by the company for remote locations.

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

    Weather Indoor/Outdoor. Frequently exposed to arctic conditions.

    Noise level: Moderate to Loud

    Description of environment: This is a remote camp setting. Employees must constantly be able to stand, walk, climb, push, pull use hands and arms, stoop, kneel and crouch. Employees are occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

    Travel: Must be able to travel by plane and/or bus to remote camps.

    Physical requirements: Fit For Duty Test

    • Lift: Lift 25 lbs. from floor to knuckle x 2,
    • Lift: Lift 10 lbs. from floor to waist x 2,
    • Carry: Carry 25 lbs. with two hands for a minimum distance of 50 feet,
    • Squat Test: Functionally squat x 5, self-paced but continuous,
    • Kneel: Kneel on one knee and stand. Return to kneel on opposite knee. Repeat alternate kneeling sequence x 5 for each knee, self-paced but continuous.
    • Stairs: Climb up and down 12 steps x 9 for a total of 108 steps, self-paced.
    • Allow a 30 second rest period after completing 54 step.
    • Stairs and Carry: Climb up and down 12 steps x 2 for a total of 24 steps while carrying 25 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced.
    • Allow a 30 second rest period after completing climbing up and down 12 step.,
    • Slanted Ladder: Climb a slanted ladder with 6 rungs x 2 repetitions for a total of 12 rungs, self-paced but continuous.
