Safety Specialist implements, manages and monitors safety programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable requirements. Evaluates the organization's procedures, facilities and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safeguards and solutions. Being a Safety Specialist ensures the organization complies with all current safety regulations and that all employees are aware of safety requirements and are prepared to follow safety procedures. Collects data and reports on all safety and accident events. Additionally, Safety Specialist may have additional responsibility for fire prevention, hazardous waste management, resource conservation, or other safety related activities depending on the industry and location. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Safety Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:

    Responsible for recognizing and evaluating safety and environmental risks for field operations, and for implementing control measures that are designed to mitigate those risks resulting from human error and equipment operation. Serve as a safety and environment resource for field employees.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    Safety Environmental Compliance

    • Lead and Conduct Field Management Safety Audits designed to identify Mechanical and Operational rule compliance
    • Validate field safety compliance through pin-pointed interactions with field labor based around Loram Operating Rules and the Eight Life Changing Decisions
    • Drive incident investigations, completing Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action planning and roll out to Field Operations
    • Identify field opportunities to better streamline Process Control / Best Practices / Occupational Health Surveillance
    • Optimizing Field Safety Leadership with stabilized efficient communication through "I LEAD" - (I Learn / I Engage / I Apply / I Deliver) engagement structure.
    • Continued, validated day to day safety performance of field personnel to ensure operating compliance with FRA, OSHA, and other applicable regulations.

    Safety Environmental Management

    • Collaborate with Safety Leadership on Fleet Safety Analytics to pinpoint focused action plan around Accidents / Injuries / Interaction and Root Cause Analysis
    • Identify top tier customer counterparts, FRA field officers, to ensure joint safety audits are conducted, ensuring defined action items to better educate and ensure overall compliance
    • Proactively lead communication with Learning and Development / Field Operations to mitigate downtime though credential management
    • Hands on "Coaching / Teaching & Mentoring" of safety compliance with General Laborers, Operators, Assistant Superintendents, Superintendents and Field Assistant Managers
    • Attend and participate in Loram and customer safety meetings and seminars

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business Operations, Transportation Safety Administration, Occupational Health

    Experience: 1-2 years relative safety experience. 3 years railroad knowledge and experience.

    Other Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Attention to detail, ability to communicate at all levels of the organization,
    • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel),
    • Ability to work with others through complex situations
    • Excellent decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability and willingness to support Loram's safety critical mission, therefore, be available 24 hours per day / 7 days per week on a 6 week on 2 weeks off rotation, or 3 weeks on and 1 week off. This includes after hours, weekends, and holidays.

    Licenses/Certifications: Obtain and Maintain railroad safety training and certifications

    5 years combination of education and experience in safety management, railroad, or occupational health
