Safety Specialist implements, manages and monitors safety programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable requirements. Evaluates the organization's procedures, facilities and equipment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safeguards and solutions. Being a Safety Specialist ensures the organization complies with all current safety regulations and that all employees are aware of safety requirements and are prepared to follow safety procedures. Collects data and reports on all safety and accident events. Additionally, Safety Specialist may have additional responsibility for fire prevention, hazardous waste management, resource conservation, or other safety related activities depending on the industry and location. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Safety Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.     JOB TITLE:

    Industrial Hygiene Specialist

    JOB PURPOSE:

    Protect the health and safety of workers and the public by anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling chemical, physical, ergonomic or biological hazards.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide expertise and recognition of hazards in the workplace. Identify and understand potential sources of danger, such as chemical substances, physical and biological agents and ergonomic stressors.
    • Assess the extent to which workers are exposed to hazards. Perform assessments which include measuring and quantifying level, duration and frequency of exposure. Determine whether exposure levels are within acceptable limits or if control measures are needed.
    • Track exposure levels and regularly assess the effectiveness of control measures in order to maintain safe conditions.
    • Perform safety testing and inspections to assure compliance with federal, state, local and University regulations.
    • Implement effective control measures to minimize or eliminate exposure to hazards. This could include modifying equipment and/or processes, establishing policies and procedures and teaching the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Supervise and participate in the correction of activities and accidents resulting in or potentially resulting in contamination or exposure to any type of hazardous materials to the University community/facilities and the public.
    • Perform health risk assessments to determine health effects of exposure to hazards. Evaluate scientific literature and/or toxicological data to understand the risks associated with particular substances.
    • May approve, coordinate, monitor and/or close facilities, storage sites or field experiments involving hazardous materials or other environmental hazards within designated areas.
    • Provide training and education about safety practices and proper use of PPE to assist in mitigating risks. Design, implement, advise, instruct and evaluate users on new and established federal, state and institutional policies related to safety programs.
    • Read, understand and enforce regulatory compliance to ensure UW compliance with all regulatory requirements/agencies.

    REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

    This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Environmental Sciences field or equivalent

    Experience: 2-4 years work-related experience

    Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements:

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Customer service standards and procedures
    • Current chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene and/or environmental health standards
    • Licenses and registrations required by appropriate Federal and State agencies
    • Knowledge of state and federal regulations including OSHA, ADA, etc.
    • Investigate and report hazards concerning biological, chemical and occupational health
    • Develop and deliver effective training programs and presentations
    • Examine and re-engineer operations and procedures, formulate policy and develop and implement new strategies and procedures
