  • Responsible Energy Operations (REO) is an Illinois Basin Coal Producer with multiple surface operations in Indiana and Illinois. REO is currently seeking qualified individuals to fill the Safety Technician position based in Petersburg, Indiana.

    Position Summary:

    The ideal candidate for this role is a team-oriented individual with strong personnel management skills with the ability to quickly develop strong internal working relationships with company managers, supervisors, foreman & employees. The individual will need excellent verbal and written communication skills to work successfully in a fast-paced environment throughout multiple operating facilities in the Illinois Basin. This individual will be required to apply experience, company policies & procedures, as well as engage with the workforce to solve everyday issues as related to safety aspects of the mining process. The individual will be required to establish priorities, coordinate multiple initiatives, manage and implement training programs, and be a safety leader to ensure health & safety is conducted within compliance of all applicable health and safety regulations and policies.

    A minimum of 5 years of operational experience in surface coal mining setting or related work experience is required. Additional experience in a Safety and Health management level related position in a surface mining environment is strongly preferred.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but not limited to the following)

    • Be a leader and role model for safety.
    • Extensive knowledge of current company safety policies and knowledge of Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) standards.
    • Maintain a comprehensive safety program that meets or exceeds company policies and all applicable regulations and industry standards and be responsible for policy implementation as required.
    • Support the company safety audit and inspection program including conducting regular safety audits and inspections of all mine sites, coaching other managers/employees, and monitoring performance metrics for success.
    • Oversee and deliver safety training programs for all employees.
    • Lead investigation of incidents to determine root cause and implement and communicate corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence across all sites.
    • Promote safety awareness through training of field staff and investigate complaints.
    • Serve as the company liaison with federal and state regulatory agencies
    • Collaborate with management team to develop and implement best practices in safety.
    • Maintain accurate and complete records related to safety.
    • Able to train employees on various tasks and ensure employees comprehension of the subject matter.
    • Responsible for Safety Culture Development and monitoring through Safety Compliance Training and new hire onboarding.
    • Responsible for record keeping and filing, both for internal requirements and all regulatory agencies including MSHA.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-speed environment
    • Ability to exercise good judgment.
    • Self-motivation, taking initiative to make improvements.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    • Flexibility in your schedule to meet the needs of the field, including nights and weekends as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Experience/Knowledge

    • Strong organizational skills: ability to manage multiple projects at once, keep information organized and meet deadlines.
    • Excellent communication skills (visual and verbal).
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion for handling sensitive personnel matters.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point & Outlook).
    • Adequate knowledge of MSHA Regulations.
    • Dust Sampling Certification (or able to obtain).
    • MSHA Instructor Certification (or able to obtain).
    • CPR Certification (or able to obtain).
    • Accident/Incident Investigation Training.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    · Minimum of 5 years of hands-on operational experience in surface coalmining setting or related work experience is required.

    · Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management or similar preferred.

    · Must have a clean driving record.

    Experience in a safety managerial position preferred.
