We are committed to the outreach and promotion of good health to a diverse student community. The position offers a 4-week summer furlough. Positions with summer work breaks contain regularly scheduled periods during which the Mental Health Educator remains an employee, retains health benefits, but is not at work.

    UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological support to UCSC students. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities, through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services. The Primary Care Program includes primary care and same-day care, with the support of on-site radiology, a COLA-accredited high complexity clinical laboratory and campus pharmacy. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) supports UCSC students to maintain or improve their general well-being by providing a broad range of counseling, psychiatric services, consultation and outreach services and programs. Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs. SHS employs approximately 120 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. Student Health Services welcomes staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.

    JOB SUMMARY

    Under the general direction of the Director of Student Health Outreach & Promotion (SHOP), the Mental Health Educator is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive student wellness program in mental well-being and related college health topics. The Mental Health Educator will work collaboratively with the SHOP team, SHS staff, and campus partners to coordinate the Peer Education program, deliver student health education, and promote campus policy/systems/environmental changes to support student mental health and wellness. The Mental Health Educator is responsible for utilizing best practices in public health to create a campus environment that supports students in their well-being and academic success, reduce stigma and barriers to seeking health services, and promote positive student health behaviors.

    Salary Information: Salary Range: $5,975 - $6,950 / Monthly. Salary commensurate with skills, experience, and level of education.

    JOB DUTIES

    40% - Program Development
    • Develops, implements and evaluates effectiveness of mental health promotion / education programs using individual, group and population level/environmental management strategies to help improve outcomes for students.
    • Researches best practices in mental health promotion strategies and remains up to date with evidence-informed and evidence-based interventions.
    • Assists management with conducting educational needs assessments, compiles program and student data, and prepares reports to aid in evaluating initiative and program effectiveness. Recommends changes or improvements.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of health promotion, behavior change, and public health theories and models; evidence-informed health promotion programs; and environmental change strategies / socio-ecological models.
    • Performs related work as required including some evening and weekend activities to reach desired audiences and program objectives.

    30% - Outreach & Community Engagement
    • Facilitates orientation programs and engages in other orientation events as a representative of Student Health Services. Provides backup to other Health Promotion staff as needed.
    • Represents the UCSC Student Health Center to the Office of the President and / or community organizations.
    • Develops a strong network of relationships with University constituents (e.g., Student Affairs, Athletics and Recreation, Residential Life, Greek, Alumni, academic deans and programs, new student orientation, study abroad) to maintain and develop programming partnerships, and facilitates broader campus discussions to coordinate a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to health and wellness for students.
    • Actively participates in and / or leads departmental, divisional, and / or campus committees or workgroups as requested and approved.

    20% - Student Development
    • Demonstrates skills to train and supervise student employees and volunteers. Mentors and develops student staff as program leads.
    • Meets / consults individually with student clients on various topics that impact college student health and mental health and making appropriate referrals to campus and community resources.
    • Works closely with Student Health Services and other campus / community partners to foster and maintain a positive working relationship to facilitate effective and efficient student referrals.
    • Establishes and maintains relationships to outreach to new students; including orientation programs, residential life, student organizations, student resource centers, etc.


    10% - Facilitate Campus Mental Health Communication
    • Establishes a robust social media with Mental Health Peer team presence. Coordinates the creation and distribution of marketing and promotional materials for all assigned programs and initiatives.
    • Provides consultation to campus units, leaders, faculty and staff on campus data and public health recommendations.
    • Identifies opportunities to infuse mental health and well-being policies and practices throughout campus.
    • Works closely with Strategic Communications to respond to emerging issues and interacts effectively with on and off campus partners.
    • Works closely with campus leadership and partners to disseminate campus wide mental health and well-being information.


    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's degree in related area* and / or equivalent experience** / training
    • Thorough knowledge of health education theories, research, and program assessment; planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs; and industry standards for the delivery of health education in higher education.
    • Experience interacting with diverse individuals of various ethnic, racial, social, cultural, economic, political, sexual orientation and gender identities.
    • Ability to maintain strict confidence of confidential information and perform a wide range of duties that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, flexibility and discretion.
    • Acute attention to detail.
    • Organizational Skills - Ability to successfully track and follow-up on a wide variety of tasks and to efficiently perform tasks with accuracy.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    • Selected Candidate will be required to pass a pre-hire criminal history background check.
    • Must complete HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act) Training within 30 days of hire.
    • Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview.
    • Will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years.
    • If selected candidate engages in scheduled telecommute work, they must be able to work remotely from a home office and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
    • Job will require occasional working of non-traditional hours.
