BUS DRIVER
DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation, to operate a school bus over
designated routes within an established time schedule; to transport students to and from school and on field trips and/or special events; to perform daily inspections of a bus and transportation equipment, and prepare reports concerning maintenance needs; and to do other related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
1. Drives a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule;
2. Transports students, staff, and other passengers as needed, to and from school, field trips, and/or special events;
3. May transport students with special needs;
4. Assists students in safely getting on and off the bus, and across highways and streets (as required), at designated stops and on field trips and/or special events;
5. Supervise and maintain student conduct during transport to assure safe vehicle operation;
6. Operates school bus warning devices while stopped to warn approaching traffic to stop;
7. Provides bus evacuation and safety instruction to students, staff, and other passengers;
8. Performs daily pre- and post-operative safety inspection on assigned school bus or buses per the daily checklist form and reports any and all mechanical defects or malfunctions;
9. Observes legal and defensive driving practices, assuring compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes, and regulations;
10. Adheres to provisions of Motor Vehicle Code, and pupil transportation regulations;
11. Operates a two-way radio;
12. Assists in the safe loading and unloading of equipment;
13. Washes (including windows), sweeps, cleans, and refuels buses and other automotive transportation equipment;
14. Completes the daily record of transportation functions, including students transported, mileage, type of trip, and standby time;
15. Administers first aid

~Two (2) years experience driving any motor vehicle;
~One year of experience in the transport of school children;
~Completion of a school bus driver training program
Education:
~High school diploma or equivalent
License and Certificate Requirements:
~Possession of a valid Class A or B, California Driver License with appropriate endorsements;
~Possession of a California School Bus Driver's Certificate;
~Standard First Aid Certificate;
~Applicants must have held a valid driver's license for the past two consecutive years, to date, with no chargeable accidents within that time;
~Any moving traffic citation during the past ten years will be evaluated and may be considered disqualifying;
~Must pass State Skills Test and State Written Test
~Must meet minimum physical requirements as prescribed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles
Insurance Requirements:
~Must be able to be insured and continue to be insurable by the District's liability insurance carrier.
Experience:

~One year of experience in the transport of school children;
~Completion of a school bus driver training program
Education:
