Job Title: School Nurse
General Description:
The responsibility of the School Nurse is to support students and staff of The Highlands School in the area of health. The School Nurse may expect to interact with faculty and staff, students, parents, physicians, community agencies and other resources. The position of School Nurse is directly responsible to the Head of School. The School Nurse must have an active registered nurse license from the Maryland Board of Nursing and must have completed the requisite delegating nurse training.
The School Nurse duties include, but are not limited to:
Student Health:
● Assessing, planning, and implementing health care for students to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning
● Implementing first aid and care of the sick or injured student
● Documenting and administering physician prescribed medications; delegating authority to Medication Technicians
● Serving as intermediary between school, home, private physician and health and social agencies regarding the health status of students and their needs
● Reviewing and maintaining health records and communicating appropriate health information to staff
● Recommending and implementing school policies to comply with established health laws and regulations; completing requisite reporting on a timely basis
● Coordinating and assisting with required health screenings; cooperating with the Harford County Health Department in the control and prevention of communicable diseases
Health Education:
● Finding opportunities to promote healthy practices for students and staff
● Functioning as the health resource support person for curriculum development and school programs
● Plan and provide in-service education for school personnel regarding blood borne pathogens, first aid and emergency care procedures, and other health practices
Additional Responsibilities:
● Ordering and upkeep of health suite supplies; maintaining medical equipment
● Maintaining confidential student/employee health information in accordance with HIPAA regulations
● Reviewing the Critical Incident Plan for health/medical procedures
● Attending in-service training and faculty meetings
● Assuming school duties as assigned
This is a full-time,10-month salaried school year position.
