    School Public Health Nurse

    General Summary

    Under the supervision of the Superintendent of School District or their designee, the School
    Public Health Nurse addresses school district needs by providing comprehensive nursing
    skills and services including assessment, teaching, counseling, prevention, and referral
    services to students in the local school district. Coordinates and participates in the operation
    of clinics and programs to promote health and wellness to students/staff in the school.
    Maintains patient records and program activity records and prepares required reports. The
    School Public Health Nurse solves problems with considerable autonomy in working with
    students, families, staff and groups in the school district. Prepares and maintains patient
    records, program activity records, required reports, program policies.
    The School Public Health Nurse will also provide front-line support for COVID-19 testing
    and reporting, help school districts identify emerging COVID-related health concerns, and
    strengthen best health practices by providing consultation, prevention services, and
    appropriate public health strategies for the district. The School Public Health Nurse will
    help to address the greatest needs in school health: the health and mitigation challenges
    faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to other existing and emergent health
    issues.

    School Public Health Nurse Summary

    1. Assesses student health, various tests, screens results and correlates them with health
    history and physical assessment. Determines absence or presence of abnormalities
    in the health history, physical examination, and health maintenance activities. Plans
    and provides appropriate intervention.
    2. Makes appropriate referrals, utilizing an up-to-date list of resources within and for
    the surrounding counties. Contacts local health providers and community agencies to
    make referrals.
    3. Provide medical care and services to students according to physician prescribed
    medical care and treatment orders. With parental consent, provide emergency
    treatment and routine first aid in case of illness or injury.
    4. Provide medical first aid and emergency support to faculty and staff, as needed and
    appropriate.
    5. Provides health education to students and families.
    6. Participates in the orientation of new staff. Collaborates with other school staff
    utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to provide quality care to students.
    7. Writes policies, protocols, and procedures regarding the programs and services.
    8. Ensures student records are kept secure and confidential and maintained consistent
    with School District policies and procedures and HIPPA/FERPA standards.
    Educates students and families of their rights as related to privacy of medical
    records.
    9. Assists in school health education on a variety of topics and represents the school at
    various school activities related to the promotion of health and the prevention of
    disease. Provides education to schools.
    10. Prepares information to inform and educate the school with regards to emerging
    health concerns, clinics, as well as health and wellness topics.
    11. Attends conferences, training and continuing education events for all appropriate and
    involved programs. Maintains specific certifications as per program requirements.
    Maintains up-to-date information on involved programs via webcasts, self-study and
    education.
    12. Reports cases of suspected abuse or neglect of children and adults to proper
    authorities in accordance with department policy and state law. Provides
    consultation to these children and their families.
    13. Collaborates with administrators, supervisors, and inter-agency personnel to review
    and interpret data relevant to the health needs of the school district. Compiles data
    and statistics for administrators to assist them in determining priorities for
    department services. Participates in program planning and development through
    involvement in department and community committees.
    14. Initiates, maintains, and updates various records, and prepares reports of work
    activities, communicable diseases, and other subjects for state reports and
    departmental administrators.
    15. Assists in community health education on a variety of topics and represents the
    department at various community activities related to the promotion of heath and the
    prevention of disease.
    16. Maintains Registered Nurse license by completing required CEUs within allotted
    time frame.
    17. Performs other duties assigned.

    COVID Specific Responsibilities

    1. Provides consultation, leadership, and professional development opportunities for
    quality public health services to the school district for prevention of COVID-19.
    2. Serves as a team member providing preventive services, early identification of
    problems, interventions, and referrals due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
    3. Monitors, interprets, synthesizes, and disseminates relevant research findings and
    other information related to COVID-19, public health, current legal issues, and new
    legislation that impacts school health programs and services.
    4. Interprets, reviews and disseminates model policies, standards, and best practices to
    promote safe, legal, and effective COVID-19 prevention strategies.
    5. Serves as the health care representative providing guidance and training to the
    school district on appropriate COVID-19 prevention strategies including COVID-19
    health screening programs, infectious disease reporting, and contact tracing; and
    identification of students' chronic health care needs and how they may be impacted
    by COVID-19.
    6. Compile and submit required COVID-19 data quarterly to SRESD. SRESD submit
    to Health Department.
    7. Stays current on the emerging COVID-19 guidance to appropriately answer
    questions; stay current on cases in the county.
    8. Outreach to students at-risk (for COVID-19) and offer guidance and information.
    9. In coordination with school administration, keep parents, family and staff informed
    by proactively communicating updates on the illness and how to address related
    stress and anxiety.
    10. Assists with best practices and protocols surrounding COVID-19.
    11. Executes other duties as assigned by superintendent or designee.

    Employment Qualifications

    Education: Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelor’s Degree in
    Nursing preferred.
    Experience: Two years of nursing experience with an emphasis on assessment and
    communication skills. A Master’s Degree in Nursing may be substituted for experience.
    Other Requirements: Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in
    the State of Michigan. Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.
