Job Overview:

A School Nurseshould be able to make quick decisions, communicate effectively, and have a nurturing, caring attitude toward children and families. The nurse should possess strong communication skills while having strict understanding of confidentiality. The School Nurse is a liaison between the student, school, family, health care professionals and the community.

REPORTS TO: Program Director, Executive Director

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Identify any health needs that may create barriers to the educational progress.

2. Assume a leadership role within a multidisciplinary team.

3. Develops and manages the Individual Health Care Plan for students.

4. Assess each individual student. Identifies needs, formulates a diagnosis with the health team and collaborates with the student, teachers and family to create a plan. Ability to implement, monitor and re-evaluate a plan of care or adjust if necessary.

5. Make needed referrals or arrange services needed for identified needs or treatments within the scope of nursing practice.

6. Provide individual case follow-up to Health Care Team on all plans of care at regularly scheduled meetings.

7. Ensure confidentiality and HIPPA compliance throughout the entire process.

8. Schedule and assist in general health screenings.

9. Document all health screening results on health records.

10. Assess the School’s immunization status and take action to bring each building into compliance.

11. Communicate with Coordinated School Health Team, Students, Parents, Teachers, Counselors, Physicians at monthly scheduled meetings or as needed

12. Provide supervision on campus of prescribed nursing care.

13. Collect data and utilize skills needed for individual and team planning.

14. Respond to emergencies and disasters on campus.

15. Manage potential emergent events in the school setting (e.g., diabetes, asthma)

16. Provide health education to individuals, students, staff, families, and to the community through the classroom or other public settings.

17. Form or take an active role in each school’s health council.

18. Advocate for health policies and programs in schools. Take an active role in the development and evaluation of school health policies.

19. Participate in school activities that promote positive mental and physical health.

20. Assess safety of the school environment. Work with the Superintendent, Principal, Counselors, Emergency services and community resources to address needs identified.

21. Assist in grant writing for health and safety needs in the school setting.

22. Collect data related to school health. Report data to Program Director quarterly.

23. Collaborate closely with the Family Support Coordinator-Case Manager at each school.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

1. Oklahoma Registered Nursing license

2. School Nurse Certificate (can be obtained after employment)

3. Licensed Practical Nurse is acceptable but must be supervised by a Registered Nurse.

4. Experience in school nursing is a plus or nursing experience in related fields.

5. Physical, social and mental health assessment skills.

6. Must have strong communication skills, written and oral.

7. Ability to work independently.

8. Flexibility with time and the ability to possibly travel to Lincoln, Pottawatomi or Seminole County Schools.

9. Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.

10. Provide a current resume’ with a minimum of 3 references.

11. Consent to a background check.
