    Position Title: Certified School Nurse
    Location/Department: Pine-Richland High School
    Reports To: Building Principal
    Salary: Pine-Richland School District considers both level of education as well as teaching experience in determining starting salaries.
    The District is currently negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement. The starting annual salary for a full-time teacher is no
    less than $55,455.

    SUMMARY :
    Coordinates student health services program and performs all duties assigned to the Certified School Nurse. Supervises and maintains health records for students; coordinates required health care screenings. Administers and coordinates routine and emergency health care, including the administering of prescribed medications.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Other duties may be assigned.
    • Observe students on an as needed basis or during routine screening to detect health needs; provides or recommends appropriate intervention with parents; offers required advice.
    • Conduct classroom training for students concerning issues relating to adolescence, personal health and hygiene, communicable diseases and handicapping conditions.
    • Serve as a member of the student assistance/instructional support team as needed.
    • Confer with students and parents for health or hygiene related purposes.
    • Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, and health department on student health matters.
    • Screen students who present symptoms of a health-related problem.
    • Administers emergency first aid services in accordance with established medical procedure and Board policy.
    • Confer with physician or dentist on health or dental needs of individual students.
    • Administer student medication and/or train other designated personnel to administer medications, in accordance with written physician's orders, Board policy and applicable law and regulations.
    • Evaluate health status of students referred for suspected chemical use, refer to parents, medical care agencies, and submit report to administration.
    • Evaluate wounds on students referred in child abuse case study referral to health care, completion of C.Y.S. written report, and assist administration in reporting to PA hotline.
    • Schedule, coordinate and supervise special health programs such as new immunization mandates/requirements, or annual high school blood drive.
    • Record cumulative data of health care for the PA State School Health Services and Request for Reimbursement document submitted annually.
    • Coordinate TB testing for students.
    • Review and record athletic physical exams completed through the Athletic Department.
    • Advise school personnel in health and safety in blood borne pathogen and sanitation issues in schools.
    • Contact parents of students when necessary.
    • Call for and coordinate on-site EMS response teams.
    • Coordinate on-site emergency care for staff members and visitors.
    • Coordinate health services as required for students with special health needs.
    • Maintain cumulative health records on all students as required by Board policy and health department guidelines.
    • Implement Board policy and follows health department guidelines concerning the exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases. (COVID-19, TB, head lice, impetigo, ringworm, etc.)
    • Schedule students for various required screening procedures. (Physical, dental exams, etc.)
    • Document school accident reports according to Board policy.
    • Restock health room supplies and maintain inventory.
    • Serve as a member of department/building teams or committees.
    • Maintain accurate and complete records, as required by law, and ensure that all activities comply with Board policies, rules and guidelines and all administrative requirements.
    • Maintain effective working relationship with professional and support staff, administration, students, parents and community groups.
    • Regular and timely attendance.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or their respective designee(s).
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :
    Supervise all activities in the nurse's office and students in the office.

    EXPERIENCE :
    Experience in school nursing; experience in emergency care and/or pediatrics is desirable. Student assistance or conflict resolution training and experiences are highly desirable.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS :
    Valid PA certification as a school nurse and valid PA registered nurses' license, current criminal record, FBI and child abuse clearances.

    Due to the sensitive nature of this position and access to academic, medical and psychological records, the highest degree of confidentiality is required. Knowledge of and strict compliance with Family Education Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) required.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS
    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from teachers, administrators, staff, students, parents and residents.

    COMPUTER SKILLS
    Ability to use and provide basic instruction in a PC or Macintosh environment, while assisting students.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
    Ability to utilize statistical concepts as they apply to educational measurement and research.

    REASONING ABILITY
    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
    Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in the area of nursing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.     During a typical workday, school nurses are required to stand approximately 30-35% of the day on flat surfaces. Periods of continual standing can be up to 30 minutes at one time, but are at the nurse's discretion. Nurses may change position as desired. When in the classroom, nurses write on the chalk/markerboard or instruct students from a central location in the classroom. Standing is performed intermittently with sitting and walking. Nurses walk about the school throughout the school day.

    Lifting/carrying requirements are minimal. Nurses are required to lift supplies weighing less than 10-15 lbs.; heavier objects weighing up to 25 lbs. (AV or computer equipment) on a rare basis. Carts are available to transport heavier items. Pushing/pulling - Nurses are required to push/pull file cabinets or desk drawers. Climbing/balancing - No significant amount of climbing or balancing is expected. Stooping, kneeling, bending at waist/knees - not significant; however, nurses may stoop or kneel (such as at a student's desk) while engaged in special projects. Reaching - Nurses may reach on frequent basis while performing typical job functions, primarily between the knee and shoulder levels.

    Dexterity - Fine manipulation is a requirement of this position while operating a computer. Nurses must also demonstrate legible handwriting, which can be understood by students and adults. Specific vision abilities required include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.
