General Description
The Principal of Saint Benedict Catholic School provides spiritual, educational and administrative leadership that confidently and compassionately proclaims the Gospel of Christ, seeking always to build a vibrant Christian community that recognizes and responds to the needs of others in imitation of Jesus.
The Principal is responsible for day-to-day operations of the school and is directly accountable to the school Trustees who are represented normally by the designated Priest/Pastor Superintendent as outlined in the Board of Trustees Statutes (revised March 2014).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Spiritual Leadership
· Works cooperatively with the Trustees to provide for the continuous spiritual development of faculty, staff and students and personally models this development
· Creates and maintains visible signs of Catholic mission in, around and throughout the school and all school events
· Works closely with pastors to ensure the school is a vibrant source for evangelization in both sponsoring parishes
· Remains appraised on current catechetical techniques and emerging faith formation trends to assist students and faculty grow in their understanding and practice of the Catholic Faith
· Ensures the Strategic Plan goals regarding Catholic Mission are implemented with the assistance of the Catholic Identity Committee members
Educational Leadership
· Organizes, administers and evaluates instructional programs with faculty and adhering to the contours of the Diocese of Toledo elementary school course of studies
· Determines effective instructional strategies with faculty in accordance with the Ohio Department of Education and the Diocese of Toledo
· Maintains full school accreditation with the Ohio Catholic School Accreditation Association and State of Ohio accreditation requirements
· Ensures school Strategic Plan goals are implemented regarding educational excellence and attaining academic benchmarks
· Evaluates the success of evidence-based and experiential learning goals, amending these programs as needed
· Creates school professional development goals designed to meet and exceed federal, state and local educational standards
· Commits to a personalized approach that reverences all people and recognizes the unique needs of every learner
Administrative Leadership
· Supports and evaluates the performance of faculty and staff members through informal and formal observations, one-on-one conferences and written feedback
· Maintains essential records on employees, students and programs; maintains all necessary documentation to support accreditation of the school; collects, maintains and disseminates student records according to Diocese of Toledo policies
· Assists in the recruiting, hiring and dismissing employees with the guidance of the Diocese of Toledo Human Resources Department and, whenever necessary, in consultation with the Trustees
· Keeps the Handbook current and accurate and maintains effective communication for school employees, parents, students, sponsoring parishes and the wider community
· Ensures the safety of all students and staff through effective management of school operations
· Plans and coordinates school public relations, working cooperatively with the Director of Enrollment, especially working to keep school successes and needs before the members of the sponsoring parishes
· Establishes and supports a formal PTO program
· Maintains effective relationships among students, parents, teachers, support staff, trustees and parish leaders
· Prepares and presents reports as requested by the Trustees
· Observes all regulations pertaining to school attendance
· Provides for adequate supervision of students on school premises and during school sponsored activities
· Works collaboratively with the Director of Finance & Operations to develop annual budget
· Assures sound financial management is practiced by the school. This includes prudent hiring practices in harmony with budgeted amounts and diocesan salary guidelines; effective management of discretionary spending accounts and oversight of all major fundraising activities along with the direct approval for all fundraising activities
· Reviews budget and financial reports cooperatively with Director of Finance & Operations, school Finance Committee and Trustees. Attendance at school (Trustee) Finance Committee meetings is expected
Qualifications
The incumbent of this position is a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.
Education and Experience
· Bachelors’ degree in Education/Education Administration; preferred Master’s degree in Education/Education Administration
· Minimum of 2 years as a Principal-Minister or equivalent experience
· Ohio Principal’s Licensure
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook), internet (including basic webpage development skills and social networking sites) and email
· Works independently and identify accurately when email, phone calls or in-person meetings are required
· Develops and maintains positive relationships with employees, parents and students along with leaders from the sponsoring parishes
· Faces situations consistently, confidently, compassionately, tactfully, always advancing the inherent dignity of all people and upholding rights
· Organizes and prioritizes work, is proactive, takes initiative, resolves complex problems and sees tasks through to their proper completions while managing multiple priorities simultaneously
· Communicates interpersonally at high level verbally and in writing; can produce clear, concise reports and recommendations and create and lead effective presentations
· In compliance with Protecting Youth and All Who Serve Them and all Diocese of Toledo requirements including BCI/FBI background checks prior to employment and every five years
