Secretary to Chief Executive Officer provides administrative support in a variety of functions to the Chief Executive Officer that are focused on increasing the efficiency of the executive. Reviews, prioritizes, directs and delegates a wide variety of complex and confidential requests that are presented to the executive for consideration. Being a Secretary to Chief Executive Officer summarizes, prioritizes, and researches information into a concise and usable format for the executive to review. Responds to or routes priority or confidential inquiries from external or internal sources with correspondence or other messaging on behalf of the executive. Additionally, Secretary to Chief Executive Officer creates or directs creation of reports, charts, budgets and other presentation materials for the executive. Coordinates high level projects, travel arrangements, and meetings. May plan and schedule work and direct other staff to deliver support. Has a broad knowledge and understanding of the company's operations and business objectives. Requires an associate degree or its equivalent. Typically reports to the CEO. The Secretary to Chief Executive Officer contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     The Opportunity

    Virginia Commonwealth University seeks a highly experienced professional for the position of Chief Audit and Compliance Executive. This position is responsible for developing and directing comprehensive audit and compliance programs for VCU and VCU Health. The role reports directly to the University Board of Visitors and the Health System Board of Directors while reporting administratively to the President.

    About Audit and Compliance Services

    The Audit and Compliance Services team supports audit and management services for the university and VCU Health, integrity and compliance for the university, and VCU Health compliance services. With a staff of 39 team members, the ACS department provides an independent assessment of the University’s and Health System’s controls, business processes, and compliance as well as recommendations for continuous improvement. The Chief Audit and Compliance Executive is responsible for ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with appropriate professional standards.

    About the Role

    This position will be responsible for maintaining professional and proactive relationships with senior management to ensure a strong working knowledge of operations, strategies, technology, and key initiatives as well as:

    • Developing risk-based audit and compliance plans for the University and Health System

    • Establishing and maintaining active and continuous quality control programs

    • Conducting investigations and special reviews as necessary or requested by the Boards or senior leadership

    • Coordinating external audit and other external control reviews and investigations

    • Recruiting and maintaining resources in appropriate numbers and competencies to achieve the annual audit and compliance plans

    • Identifying the professional developmental needs of the staff and creating strategies to meet those needs

    • Providing advice and counsel to management regarding new initiatives and strategies

    • Reporting to the Boards quarterly the results of audits, compliance reviews, and other significant developments or issues

    Required Qualifications

    • A bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or related area of specialization.

    • CPA or CIA certification or relevant healthcare certification.

    • Proven leadership success in organizations of comparable complexity with the ability to work effectively and independently at a senior leadership level.

    • Five years of supervisory experience as an audit or compliance manager or equivalent.

    • Proven ability to plan, implement, and lead the audit or compliance function.

    • Demonstrated ability to manage and complete multiple, simultaneous complex projects in a timely manner.

    • Strong technical skills in the areas of finance, accounting, auditing, compliance, and financial reporting.

    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.

    • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to deal effectively and tactfully with individuals at all levels of the institution including the Board.

    • Ability to develop and foster an open and trusting environment while embodying a commitment to improvement and betterment of the institution.

    • Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive and confidential information in line with institutional values and applicable laws.

    • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an executive leader at VCU and VCU Health.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • A master’s degree in business, accounting, or a related area of specialization.

    • Experience in higher education institutions, healthcare institutions, and related enterprises.
