Trainee (Claims)

  • SUMMARY:

    This is an entry level position that is part of a formal training program. This job is foundational and expected to be a starting point within a specific discipline (Claims) and is expected to last up to one year. 

    Upon completion of the training program the trainee is expected to be familiar with the department policies, processes, procedures, and terminology related to the job. In addition, the trainee will be proficient in the job responsibilities and tasks of the progressive positions within the career path. The trainee will be evaluated on their progress during the training period and on successful completion of the training plan. Upon satisfactory completion of training, the trainee will be eligible for a targeted position within the career path. 

     

    RESPONSIBILITIES / TASKS:

    In a Learning Capacity:

    1. Learn and develop skills and competencies from performance of assigned duties.
    2. Learn and develop skills and competencies in the use of systems, software, and programs.
    3. Research and analyze information within the assigned area (Claims)
    4. Work on special projects as assigned.
    5. Compute and provide reports, attend company meetings, and provide feedback to the appropriate supervisor(s).
    6. Works with all internal departments to resolve problems and maintain company relations.
    7. Participates as necessary on special committees and task forces.

     

    Claims: 

    1. Perform assigned training tasks including specific Claims assignments and assignments designed to introduce the incumbent(s) to all key aspects of the Company.
    2. Learn and develop skills and competencies related to Claims including verifying workers compensation coverage of employer and injured employee from policy information, determining whether the reported injury is compensable under workers compensation, determining medical causal relationship between employee injury and accident, and manage and approve medical bill payments for non-indemnity and simple indemnity claims.
    3. Under supervision of Claims Leadership, responsible for applying claims principles, knowledge and skills based on experience.

     

    This position description identifies the responsibilities and tasks typically associated with the performance of the position.  Other relevant essential functions may be required.

     

    EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

    A variety of assessments may be utilized as part of the selection process.

     

    EDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE:   

    Claims: 

    Associate’s in related field and certification (such as AIC, CPCU) required; or a Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Course work in medical terminology is desired. Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company’s learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.

     

    EXPERIENCE:

    With proper education, no experience is required. One-year of relevant experience in an insurance environment or knowledge of worker’s compensation is desired. Bi-lingual skills in speaking, writing, or reading English and Spanish are desired.

     

    SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED: 

    1. Ability to make efficient and effective decisions.
    2. Basic knowledge of workers compensation industry.
    3. Ability to function effectively in a multi-functional team environment.
    4. Ability to learn and be proficient with computers and company standard software specific to the position.
    5. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to create and maintain mutually beneficial relationships.
    6. Ability to self-motivate and work independently with minimal supervision.
    7. Ability to organize and prioritize work with minimal supervision.
    8. Ability to comprehend consequences of various situations and make appropriate individuals aware when making decisions.
    9. Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
    10. Ability to relocate, if required by business need.
    11. Ability to perform other assignments at locations outside of the office.

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS: 

    Work is performed in the remotely and occasionally in the field with minimal hazards.
