Security Specialist administers, coordinates, and evaluates security programs that support the strategy, policies, and standards established for the physical safety of all visitors, employees, or customers to the organization's facilities and the security of property and assets. Compiles data and analyzes results of audits, inspections, daily logs, and incident reports to assess security vulnerabilities, measure program effectiveness, and identify the need for additional resources. Being a Security Specialist coordinates any required security clearance processing or investigative research for employees or job candidates with applicable entities. Assists with the development of training, education programs, and communications on security policies and topics to ensure staff is prepared for potential security issues, crisis response, disaster recovery, evacuation, workplace violence, and other emergency events. Additionally, Security Specialist monitors communications and stays informed about local, state, provincial, or federal security-related information, directives, and events. May coordinate or assist with investigations and critical event responses in coordination with law enforcement and other officials. Understands law enforcement methods, tactics, and procedures. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Security Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Security Systems Specialist
  • Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
  • Santa Cruz, CA FULL_TIME
  • Under direction supervision, troubleshoots, installs and maintains CCTV and alarms (detection) systems. Plans and designs Genetec CCTV and access control systems. Is responsible for understanding and basic troubleshooting of alarm systems at the Boardwalk. Additional responsibilities include providing technical assistance on other systems supported by the Technical Services department.

The Security Systems Specialist is responsible for performing the most complex of activities related to the operations and maintenance of CCTV, access control and alarm systems.


    Job Tasks
    • Install, maintain and operate Genetec CCTV camera systems, recording systems and related computer and
    • security systems.
    • Execute security system projects to assure that services meet operational requirements for both short term and long-range business plans.
    • Perform system maintenance, repair and backup of security systems hardware and software, local area network, notification sound systems and security control systems.
    • Troubleshoot and repair video and security camera and access control systems.
    • Train staff on operations of installed CCTV and security systems such as video, access control and alarm systems.
    • Provide technical and logistical support for video, computer and notification systems requirements.
    • Coordinate, train, and motivate staff.
    • Prepare training materials, update operating manuals and systems equipment blueprints, document equipment usage, failures and repairs.
    • Maintain technical systems documentation and log troubleshooting tips.
    • Assist in the development of short and long-term service plans.
    • Make recommendations for maintenance, upgrades and use of installed audio, video and security systems and equipment.
    • Provide electronic security system support by assessing equipment needs and coordinating performing repairs.
    • May provide back up support to other technical systems and equipment including but not limited to: radios, pagers, sound and lighting systems, computer hardware and software, physical animation and telephone systems.
    • Install cable and low voltage wiring for access control systems, CCTV cameras and monitors, alarm systems.
    • Record labor and material usage for billing out.
    • May direct work of subcontractors for various projects.
    • With Security Systems Administrator’s approval, research and purchase needed equipment.
    • Operate various hand tools including: soldering irons, crimping tools, cutters, screwdrivers, pliers and wrenches.
    • Perform a wide variety if manual labor tasks such as moving, setting up and installing equipment.
    • Operate company vehicles and other support equipment including forklifts, motorized carts and personnel lifts.
    • Follow verbal and written directions to perform duties.
    • May climb up scaffolding, ladders, and use powered lifts to install equipment.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications: Training and Experience
    At least five years of progressive experience in the setup, operations, maintenance and troubleshooting of CCTV, access control and alarm systems. Use and programming of Genetec security systems or the use and programming of equivalent systems is crucial.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of principles and concepts of surveillance video, signal processing and related computer and security control systems.
    • Knowledge of the techniques of maintenance and troubleshooting of security systems and equipment.
    • Ability to plan, design, troubleshoot, install, maintain and repair a variety of technical systems and equipment.
    • Ability to plan, direct, evaluate, and coordinate security system projects to assure that services meet operational requirements for both short term and long-range business plans.
    • Ability to identify, diagnose, troubleshoot and repair video and security system problems.
    • Ability to prepare training materials, update operating manuals and document equipment usage, failures and repairs.
    • Ability to troubleshoot, install, maintain and repair a variety of technical systems and equipment and use a variety of computer software programs and operating systems.
    • Ability to learn about other aspects of the Technical Services Department.
    • Ability to learn and stay current on technological systems.
    • Ability to organize, prioritize and coordinate work activities for self and staff.
    • Ability to supervise, train, schedule, evaluate and motivate staff. •Ability to follow safety practices and proper lifting procedures.
    • Ability to use various hand tools and equipment including personnel lifts, forklifts, trucks and front loaders.
    • Ability to obtain electric cart certification and operate the same.
    • Ability to handle and adjust to changing priorities.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Ability to work with staff in other company departments to coordinate work.
    • Ability to provide consistent, friendly and helpful service to employees and guests.
    • Ability to keep information confidential.
    • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports, memos and manuals.

    Physical Requirements
    • Able to hear normal conversations, read instructions and write documentation.
    • Able to lift 70 pounds from ground to waist height.

    • Able to perform work at a height up to 40 feet.
    • Able to stand and walk up to 8 hours at a time.
    • Able to work in a noisy environment.
    • Able to move equipment which would include pushing, pulling, stooping and shoving.
