Job Description

Position Overview

A private family with a one-acre hobby farm in Bentonville is searching for a part-time farm hand to assist with livestock and garden care beginning immediately. The farm hand will work both independently and in collaboration with the farm manager on a broad range of tasks related to livestock management and vegetable/fruit production in an organic system. 15-20 hours per week. Must have weekend and evening availability.

Key Responsibilities

Daily animal management

• Uphold feeding and watering schedules for goats, pigs, turkeys, and chickens
• Move animals in and out of pens or between paddocks based on grazing needs and weather
• Perform “head counts” on animals and spot any signs of distress or ill health that need to be addressed

Daily garden management

• Manage irrigation: hand water and turn sprinkler systems on and off at appropriate times during the day; learn how to adjust watering schedules based on weather; troubleshoot issues that may arise with irrigation equipment
• Manage greenhouse: water and vent as necessary based on weather conditions
• Walk the garden and making not of any pest or animal issues that need to be addressed
• Harvest and process vegetables, fruit, and flowers as necessary

Hospitality/housekeeping

• Tidy the barn area and outdoor workspace, take out trash, clean bathroom, etc
• Occasionally handle or assist with prep, setup, and takedown for small events at the farm

Qualifications

• Experience with handling and caring for a diversity of livestock
• Experience in organic fruit and vegetable production, farm-to-table food systems
• Must be able to work and problem-solve independently, be eager to learn, willing to accept responsibility
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and lift 50 lbs. at a time
• Availability on most weekends, willingness to work early in the morning and late in the evening on some days
• Comfortable working in a family environment with children and pets.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle check.

Compensation

This is an hourly position paying $18 per hour
