Sheetmetal Mechanic sets up and operates machines such as drill presses, punch presses, saws, shears, bending rolls, brakes, grinders, and numerical control equipment to shape and alter sheetmetal according to specifications. Follows blueprints, rough sketches, or engineer drawings to shape metal accurately. Being a Sheetmetal Mechanic uses hand and power tools to shape, cut, and smooth metal and to blend seams. May set up and operate soldering and welding equipment. Additionally, Sheetmetal Mechanic typically requires a high school diploma. Typically requires a Sheetmetal Apprenticeship. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Sheetmetal Mechanic works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     • Valid California driver’s license. 
    • More than four years and up to and including five years of experience in repair and service of diesel engine and medium duty truck. Lead or supervisory experience is strongly preferred.

    • Must obtain EVT-Ambulance level 1 certification within first year of employment
    • EPA 609 certification obtained within 90 days

    Position Accountabilities

    SEMSA was established to oversee SEMSA Air and SEMSA ground operations and to coordinate emergency medical service activities through a central emergency medical communications center.

    Within this general framework, this position is accountable for the following functions:

    Key Result Areas

    Perform repair work on vehicles such as breakdowns and malfunctions to manufacturer’s guidelines to maintain the safety and reliability of the unit. Key Result Areas A. Perform repair work on vehicles such as breakdowns, malfunctions, and emergency roadside repair in a safe, efficient, and quality manner. 

    (Degree of importance: High- 40% of job)

    1. Perform general overhaul and repair work on gasoline, diesel, and propane/ natural gas-powered engines such as automobiles, trucks, ambulances, wheelchair vans and other automotive and mechanical equipment at off-site locations and at the garage.
    2. Perform operation test prior to repairs to verify complaint 
    3. Diagnose cause of any malfunction and perform repairs to manufacturers specifications including engines, transmissions and clutches, suspension and steering, fuel and ignition (gas and diesel), electrical systems, brakes, and HVAC systems 
    4. Follow paper-flow procedures including documenting correct mileage/hours, save and tag all warranty and core parts, document all repairs on work order using complaint, cause, and correction format, follow parts ordering/billing procedures. 
    5. Perform final operational test on all vehicles to quality-check all repairs 
    6. Ensure that vehicles are kept clean and washed after repair is completed 
    7. Install emergency equipment for emergency vehicles; perform repair work on other City equipment and systems as necessary. 

    Perform required inspections and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment to maximize the safety, productivity, and life of the unit.

    1. Perform DOT/PM inspections 
    2. Perform preventive maintenance on trucks such as fluid changes, lubrications, safety inspections, and brake repairs. 
    3. Perform preventive maintenance on patient cot and loading systems, adjustments, and safety inspections. 
    4. Operate vehicles and equipment to aid in diagnostics; pick up and deliver vehicles and parts. 
    5. Examine vehicles to determine if any additional safety or repair work is needed.

    Inspect, maintain, and repair aerial lift equipment to maintain the safety and reliability of the unit. 

    (Degree of importance: Average- 25% of job)

    1. Visually inspect structural integrity of aerial lift equipment and report any deficiencies so that they may be corrected. 
    2. Perform preventive maintenance and repairs to aerial devices in accordance with manufacturer's and ANSI guidelines and in a timely manner to maximize the life and productivity of the equipment.
    3. Clean and maintain the garage area and equipment. 
    4. Inventory, order and control tools, supplies and materials for garage; research, compare, and locate parts, equipment, and vehicles. 

    Perform maintenance and repair welding on equipment. Fabricate parts as required including any design work needed

     (Degree of importance: Low- 10% of job) 

    1. Inspect for cracks or damage to assess needed repair 
    2. Fabricate parts as needed to complete repair including any design work 
    3. Perform welding repair to manufacturer’s guidelines 
    4. Perform vehicle body work

    All other duties as assigned

    Physical Effort/Working Conditions

    This position will require working on, with and around 20 or more emergency ambulances and other vehicles. The incumbent is required to lift over 100 pounds as many times as 20 times per day. Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, climb, twist, bend, push/pull, run, sit, squat, kneel, and work in awkward positions from all types of locations and within the ambulance vehicles. Must be able to grasp tools and discern color.  Will be required to operate high pressure air and power-washing equipment, and common vehicular shop tools and equipment. May be required to wear a special uniform and protective devices. May be exposed to blood and body fluids that will require special precautions. Hazards also include working with chemicals, power tools, inclement weather, and working in a restricted area. EMS is a 24-hour operation therefore working hours and times will vary. Will be required to be on call.
