Shop and Alteration Tailor alters clothing to fit individual customers or repairs defective garments. May require a high school diploma or its equivalent and 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Being a Shop and Alteration Tailor is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Additionally, Shop and Alteration Tailor performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Duties:
- Perform alterations and repairs on garments and formal wear, including hemming, sewing buttons, and replacing zippers
- Take measurements to ensure proper fit and make adjustments as needed
- Use sewing machines, sergers, and other tools to complete tasks
- Follow patterns and instructions to create new garments or modify existing ones
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
Qualifications:
- Proficient in basic math skills for measuring and calculating fabric requirements
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work with precision
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
- Knowledge of different fabrics and their properties
- Experience using sewing machines and other tailoring tools
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
Please note that previous experience as a tailor or seamstress is preferred.
