Small Engine Mechanic repairs fractional-horsepower gasoline engines used to power lawnmowers, garden tractors, and similar machines. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Being a Small Engine Mechanic may have to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty with 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Additionally, Small Engine Mechanic relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Description
They are responsible for ensuring that the vessels function properly and efficiently. Some duties are but not limited to the following:
• Repair or replace wiring equipment or fixtures, using hand tools or power tools
• Travel required as needed
• Preventative maintenance checks
• Examine electrical system of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices, like ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to confirm compatibility and safety of system
• Use different types of tools or equipment, like power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, like oscilloscopes, amp meters, or check lamps
• Work from ladders to maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures
• Diagnose faulty systems, apparatuses, or parts, using equipment and hand tools to find the reason for a breakdown and correct the problem
• Inspect electrical systems, equipment, or parts to spot hazards, defects, or the necessity for adjustment or repair, and to confirm compliance with codes
• Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to see the placement of wiring or equipment, and to confirm correspondence to assembling and safety codes
• Construct and fabricate elements, using hand tools and specifications
• Direct or train other employees to put in, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures
Requirements
• Must obtain TWIC card
• Successfully pass pre-employment screening including but not limited to drug and alcohol testing.
• Have and maintain a valid Driver’s License
Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Also, using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things are physical requirements.
