Analyzes software requirements and defines system components to ensure efficient and scalable software architecture. Being a Software Architect designs and implements software solutions to consider business and technical needs and ensures compatibility with existing systems. Creates and maintains architecture documentation such as design specifications and diagrams to guide future maintenance and development. Additionally, Software Architect works with non-technical stakeholders to analyze requirements and understand constraints, dependencies, and business needs. Has in-depth knowledge of software development processes and methodologies. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Software Architect work is highly independent.     Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) manages and oversees all University activities and services related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, physical plant maintenance and operations, capital planning and space management, and the associated business services necessary to support these functions. The department includes operating budgets of over $54 million, manages a project portfolio of approximately $950 million, and employs over 370 full-time staff to carry forth the duties necessary for the campus' development and operation.

    JOB SUMMARY

    The Associate Architect is responsible for coordinating all phases of building projects and facilities modifications- from the establishment of design concepts through design implementation, and coordinates specialized and critical components of projects. The incumbent acts independently, receiving guidance at each key phase of the project, and demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. This role involves managing the design and construction of capital projects- including renovations, expansions, new facilities, and infrastructure- as well as landscape projects. The Associate Architect collects, develops, and analyzes technical data to determine project requirements and prepares information regarding specifications, materials, equipment, estimated costs, and completion times.

    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    Budgeted Salary: $115,000 - $135,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
    Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    30% - Project Management

    Delivers multiple complex capital construction projects on schedule and within project budget.

    Manages projects from the programming phase through design, construction, occupancy, and warranty period.

    Coordinates all project activities with all campus stakeholders.

    Acts as official University representative in relationships with contractors, design professionals, reviewing agencies, the campus community, and the general public.


    15% - Contract Review

    Bids or negotiates construction contracts.

    Reviews and manages construction activities, including contractor's schedule, RFIs, submittals, change order requests, and punch lists.

    Acts as liaison among project participants, resolving problems or conflicts.


    10% - Client Interaction

    Meets with clients to help define project scope and program.

    Manages the project program.


    10% - Project Plan

    • Formally establishes project plan, including working with other units, departments, and the Office of the President (i.e., Capital Planning, Budget, and Planning, Capital Programs) to facilitate this effort and ensure funding transfers.


    10% - Specification Conform

    • Ensures plans and specifications conform to the program.


    5% - Architecture Engineering Liaison

    Hires architectural and engineering firms to develop project requirement definitions, design criteria, and prepare layouts and detail drawing.

    Manages the services of the architects and engineers.


    5% - Budget Review

    • Reviews cost estimates, establishes project schedule and budget and reviews with clients.


    5% - Documentation Maintenance

    • Ensures project is properly closed out and operations and that maintenance manuals and record drawings are turned over to Physical Plant Services.


    5% - Project Software

    Creates project in project management software application.

    Completes systematic reporting and updating of project status as required by Capital Projects Management, including budget and schedule.


    5% - Administration

    Performs organizational, departmental, and administrative activities not directly relating to projects, including serving on committees representing department or unit.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
    • Knowledge and experience to effectively direct and review the preparation of design and construction documents, review and approve contractor submittals, and resolve field problems during construction.
    • Thorough written communications skills including high-level political acumen.
    • Thorough verbal and interpersonal communications skills including high level political acumen.
    • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of various computer software programs including, but not limited to MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook and Outlook calendar, Asana, and construction project management software.
    • Proven ability to manage contractors and maintain compliance to the agreed-upon scope of work and budget.
    • Familiarity with design and construction contracts, project delivery methods, contract law, public contracting code, and construction claims procedures.
    • Ability to draft modifications to standard agreements consistent with Regental Policy and in coordination with legal counsel.
    • 4 - 8 years of related experience.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • 3 years of Project Management experience with minor and major capital projects within an institute of higher education or similar environments including, but not limited to, research laboratories, instructional space, residential and dining facilities, athletics facilities, and infrastructure projects.

    • USGBC LEED Professional Accreditation

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
    • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
    • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
    • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
    • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
