About the Role
The Software Engineer is a member of a development team in one of the development units within IT Services. He or she is responsible for playing a role in the development, delivery and maintenance of enterprise or local applications or core reusable components. The incumbent is expected to understand the business practices of his or her customers within the applicable business unit or units and adapt appropriate solutions to business problems or requirements. He or she is responsible for adhering to Matson's application development principles, standards, and industry best practices.
What you'll do:
- Possess working knowledge of relevant Matson technology and general business knowledge. Seeks to familiarize oneself with Matson's business processes and continually expands on this knowledge.
- Exhibit hands-on expertise in at least one Matson technology. Exhibits initiative to learn new technologies related to Matson's target architecture.
- Communicate effectively one-on-one; possess a sense of appropriate communication methods within IT Services and with business partners.
- Execute assigned tasks with minimal supervision, consistently delivering high quality technical solutions. Self-taught on software engineering concepts. Continually assesses one's own code and seeks opportunities to make improvements.
- Design, code and test software components and framework to be used in enterprise or local applications, while adhering to standards defined in the design and development phases of the Matson SDLC. Write code that is efficient and easily maintained; develop technical documentation as defined within the SDLC.
- Perform on-call responsibilities for production support of Matson enterprise or local applications as required.
You have these skills:
The individual should have experience with full life cycle development. The individual must have experience developing in one or more of the following environments:
- Web applications using various technologies including Java ant Build, Groovy, EDI, Java 2
- Enterprise Edition framework, java, tomcat, maven, nexus, jsp, html, xml, relational database (Oracle,SQLServer), sql, jasper reports, hibernate, groovy, kibana, cloudwatch, ec2, linux, jenkins, excel macros.
- Pluses include CVS or equivalent version / source code control tool.
- Some exposure to RUP & UML or similar software development methodology is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with Optical Character Recognition software
- Able to document processes for training purposes.

And these qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S) from four-years of college or university education or equivalent technical certification is desirable.
- Possess a valid driver's license to operate a company vehicle.
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
Extra credit if you have:
- Ability to work flexible hours when required to accomplish tasks during non-business hours to reduce impact to the 24/7 terminal operations.
- Ability to travel, on notice, to other Matson locations, providing IT related services and support as requested by management.
Physical Requirements:
- Sitting up to 45 minutes per hour
- Walking up to 45 minutes per hour
- Standing up to 45 minutes per hour
- Lifting up to 50 lbs.
The annual salary range for this position in Hawaii is $81,400 - $110,620. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
